The older editions are better

I have the third edition and the latest edition of this book. In my opinion, the later editions have been dumbed down considerably. In addition to developing the basics of vector analysis, the older editions included splendid discussions of curvilinear coordinates, tensor analysis and touched on differential forms (the wedge product being introduced). While the latest edition features appendices covering specific applications such as Maxwells and Navier-Stokes equations, the explanations are far too brief to be of much use. I suggest that interested parties attempt to get used older editions whose content were presumably under the control of Davis (not Snider) being much better written and probably less expensive. The older edition had few typos with very useful and entertaining problem sets. A better alternative book might be "Vectors and Tensors in Engineering and Physics" by Donald A. Danielson in paperback.

good introduction

I just finished a class on Vector Analysis that used this book. This book is good for those who are interested in vectors. The authors start off with the basics and then move quickly to the more difficult lessons. Basically this text treats the material the same as a calculus text does with a couple of exceptions. First, the book moves more quickly than a calculus text, so if you are shaky on the first part i would advise having a calculus book there with you. Second, this book shows the proofs in a more precise manner that the calculus text that I used (Stewart). You study the same equations and theories, but now you have harder exercises to do at the end of the chapter (with most of the answers in the back of the book). So I would recommend this book to those interested in vectors who are familiar with them. Otherwise you may want to look at a calculus book to get up to speed first.

Good for reference, not so good by itself

This book was used in my vector calculus class at UCSD. I think if I was in one of my upper division engineering classes it would be great to use as a reference to help me figure out problems. However, as a math book alone, this was not too helpful. Many of the explanations lack clarity and are from a mathmatician's point of view (in other words, very difficult for lower division students who are not math majors to understand). Also, a lot of the problems are practically impossible. The only reason I did alright in this class was because I had a great teacher. I would recommend this book for people who are in science or engineering classes and need a superficial introduction to vector calculus, but NOT for math classes that go into deep analysis of vectors.

no I picked the most boring book ever

When I went downstairs to the library to look for a book I thought I was going to pick an interesting book. But, no I picked the most boring book ever. At first it interested me because Chelsea Spain the main character and her friends and her brother were cool but then I just wanted it to get to the point. I mean like Chelsea’s friend Athena got kidnapped and this guy named Harry saved her that’s chill but I just wanted it to get to the point of the book.
The whole point of the book is she takes a risk and then her father all of a sudden like gets in an accident and Chelsea's whole world changes and she knows she's been acting badly as a teenager. As I was reading it felt like the author just kept stalling and I was about to just skip the whole book and get to the end. That's how bored I was. Don't waste your time or money on this book because to be honest I would rather read a whole thesaurus than read this book again.

I bought all three of her books because I read that she is a MN author from Milaca who lives in Sauk Rapids now. As I began reading, I was thrilled that it took place in Nisswa & surrounding area with which I was familiar! I read about 2/3 of this book & had to wait until morning to finish it. It was getting too spooky & I wanted to be able to sleep! When I finished it, I could hardly wait to begin reading her next book as I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

A good start, but weak on Layer-2 defenses

First of all, let me state that this review is primarily in context of Cisco's 642-552 exam, since as of this writing, this is really the only book on their Recommended Reading for this particular exam. There are no Exam Certification series from Cisco for this specific exam, which is the foundation of their CCSP and Security Specialization certifications.

What is good about this title is coverage of security policy, vpn's, ids, firewalls, wireless, and PKI. Good introduction, and decent configuration examples. Certainly enough to get even a neophyte up and running.

So what is this title missing?

#1 SDM [Security Device Manager] configuration examples & exercises. Chances are if you're a newbie, you're going to be much more comfortable using the Browser-based GUI rather than the IOS Command Line. Additionally ALL the simulations for the 552 exam are based around SDM configuration. So I bought this book and the authorized self-study guide to study for the CCNA Security 640-553 exam. The self-study guide already covered material, so buying this book is a bit redundant.

Pros - It was cheap used.
Cons - Dated.

For starters not familiar with Cisco I'd recommend reading one the Security+ books instead.

I picked up a copy of "Network Security Fundamentals" (ISBN 1587051672) by Gert De Laet and Gert Schauwers to add to my CCIE Security reading list. Network Security Fundamentals more or less picks up with Tom Thomas's "Network Security First-Step" (ISBN 1587200996). Whereas the Thomas book serves as an excellent introduction to securing your network, "Network Security Fundamentals" is an intermediate level network security book. It delves it more details not only network design essentials, but many other security topics such as Router Security, Firewalls, Intrusion Detection, VPNs, Remote Access, and Wireless.

I found the detailed coverage on Cryptography as well as securing Web Servers especially helpful and insightful. The book includes many device configuration examples, show commands, and debug outputs. An important book for the serious martial artist wishing to deepen their understanding of the history and origins of karate

An important book on the history and origins of Naha-te based karate, this book belongs on the bookshelf of anyone with a serious interest in the history and development of karate not just Naha-te or Goju-ryu. Meticulously researched and masterfully translated, it is a wonderful collection of fascinating and important historical documents, articles and photos. Of particular interest to me were the insights into the kata and principles of Goju-ryu and Naha-te, and the very informative details and stories about Kanryo Higaonna which really fleshed him out for me. One other aspect of the book that made it stand out for me was the author's ability to allow the original writers of these historical documents speak for themselves. Rather than obscure the message with the translator's own opinions or biases, Joe Swift has translated yet preserved the voice, the culture and "feel" of the times; I could almost imagine what it must have been like back in the day! A truly wonderful and important book, highly recommended.

The fine structure of the first edition is greatly strengthened by the most recent advances in polymer science and crystal clear explanations of the important phenomena, especially in polymer physics. I was required to get this book for a college polymer class. Its not bad, but it does lack in examples. It never fully explains how to do many types of problems, which makes studying for exams much harder. If your prof fills in the blanks, its okay, or if you just want to understand some general principles, its great. It just lacks on the particular details of solving more complex problems.

Rosenthal comes out ahead!

In the fall of 2014, I purchased 1) Pearson's Mastering the National Counselor Examination and the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (2011) AND 2)Helwig's Study Guide for the National Counselor Examination and CPCE (6th Ed) AND 3)Rosenthal's Encyclopedia of Counseling 3rd Ed/15th Anniv Edition by Rosenthal.

At that time, I knew the following summer/early fall, I would be testing. My coursework was mostly completed in 2003 but needed 4 (16 hours) more courses according to the state for LPC licensure. Following the 2 semesters of additional coursework, I began to study intensely in early July 2015 for a August 8th test date. I first started with Rosenthal's. As a visual and kinesthetic learner, I highlighted the book and took separate notes on paper for information I did NOT know, severely forgotten, etc. After collating the information (set it up on a spreadsheet, typed etc (made the information more manageable (fewer pages and neater) which also provided another review as I typed), I compared my information to Helwig's. There were small discrepancies (ex. how many traits did Guilford really come up with? 120? or 180?) between the texts. This made me annoyed and anxious but not enough to throw either away. The majority of the information was the same. The difference was the style in how they were written. Rosenthal's is conversational and encourages mnemonic devices. He also does this spiral thing over the material where he will revisit it, allowing you to build confidence and check your progress. Helwig's book is set up in an outline form and only gives you the basic points which allows you to focus on only what you don't know. One could be an excellent "skimmer" and use Helwig's in a more practical way. In order to get the most out of Rosenthal, you have to read the entire book. After reviewing Helwig with condensed Rosenthal notes, I moved on to Pearson's. I read 1-2 chapters and decided that it was making me more anxious and overwhelmed. I did not utilize the book and would not recommend it. Although, initially I DID like the 5 questions after each small section which also allows you to review and check your progress, after a few sets of those, I realized that worrying over getting the right answers to those questions, for me at least, was futile. Also, the pool of knowledge that the actual exam covers is IMMENSE. So, there is no way to know if the questions are actually helping you. The sets of 5 questions did not build my confidence, and I think after taking the NCE, it could give one a false sense of confidence. (I am also the same person who did not get much benefit from all those practice ACT tests. I am better off, reviewing and practicing the material and making connections to the concepts, etc.)

So, you ask, how did I do? Today was my test. I scored (according to the NBCC 2012 normed stats) +1 SD above the mean. In other words, I did very well. If you were my best friend, I would tell you to choose between your preference of learning/studying as I described Rosenthal and Helwig and only buy the one. I would tell you that on the day of the test, you sit down and write down the things you think you will miss or information you think might forget as you test (for instance, I immediately drew out Gauss' bell shaped curve with all the different standardized scores (T, stanines, etc)), and I would say that reviewing daily up until test day is better than cramming. I don't usually write reviews, but thought it was necessary for this. I used this book to study for the NCE, which I took April 2016. Not only did I pass, but I did very well. If you read other reviews, people say that the information in this book is simple and stated much differently than the questions on the exam...and they are absolutely right. There were maybe only a handful of questions on the NCE exam that asked about the information in this book in a direct manner, such as match the theorist with the theory/what is the definition of this word, etc. The rest of the questions ask about things that use the information in this book as a foundation...just like addition is the foundation for multiplication...When I finished the test, it took a few days for it to really hit me that I DID use the info in this book on the test, but it was in such an indirect way that it didn't feel that way while taking it, and I left without a strong feeling either way as to how I did because of it. But rest assured, this book is how I passed. I studied for four months, beginning with simply reading the book and writing down EVERYTHING that I did not absolutely know...which left me with about 2 legal pads full of info. Then I compiled that info into a study guide, THEN I made flash cards based on the guide. The couple weeks leading to the test, I went through the book again just for reinforcement and practice for some things I struggled with. I also used another study guide just for some exposure to different questions. I also used the Rosenthal app to drill basic questions. I did everything I possibly could and took advantage of every free moment to study the material...and it more than paid off.

I just found out I passed the CPCE on my first try and will be graduating this Spring. I initially used both this book and the green version of Mastering the National Counseling Exam and the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam. Besides the fact that the green book was very information dense and difficult to study with, it was wrought with errors, so I decided to stick with the Rosenthal book. Seems to have worked out.

The method he uses is different, but effective.

And since I know there's plenty of people out there like me...

Practice narrowing down the answers. You may not know a specific theorist, but if you know who belongs to the other items listed, it'll be easier to answer.
The questions are long, unlike in the study books, so prepare for that. They will be detailed and sometimes have frivolous info. Focus on keywords and things you need to know.
It took a month to get my results back.
I started studying at the beginning of January and my exam date was March 7 and it seemed to be enough time for me.
