Audiology is a subject on which I previously only learned the basics and never had a good chance to learn more about. I chose this title to help me learn more about audio and kids with hearing loss and I like the format of the cases and the content is appropriately balanced so that I am learning important points without reading a book that is organized in only bullet point format.

Over the past decade, concurrent object-oriented network programming has emerged as an effective paradigm for developing software applications whose collaborating objects can either be

  • Collocated within one process or computer or
  • Distributed across a set of computers connected by a network, such as an embedded system interconnect, a local area network (LAN), an enterprise intranet, or the Internet.
  • When objects are distributed, the various entities that constitute these objects must communicate and coordinate with each other effectively. Moreover, they must continue to do so as applications change over their lifetimes. The placement of objects, the available networking infrastructure, and platform concurrency options allow for a level of freedom that's powerful, yet challenging.

When designed properly, concurrent object-oriented network programming capabilities can add a great deal of flexibility to your application options. For instance, in accordance with the requirements and resources available to your projects, you can use

    • Real-time, embedded, or handheld systems
    • Personal or laptop computers
    • An assortment of various-sized UNIX or Linux systems
    • "Big iron" mainframes and even supercomputers

You'll likely encounter complex challenges, however, when developing and porting networked applications on multiple operating system (OS) platforms. These complexities appear in the form of incompatible networking protocols or component libraries that have different APIs and semantics on different hardware and software platforms, as well as accidental complexities introduced by limitations with the native OS interprocess communication (IPC) and concurrency mechanisms themselves. To alleviate these problems, the ADAPTIVE Communication Environment (ACE) provides an object-oriented toolkit that runs portably on dozens of hardware and OS platforms, including most versions of Win32 and UNIX, as well as many real-time and embedded operating systems.

Some would have you believe that de facto or de jure OS standards, such as POSIX, UNIX98, or Win32, are all programmers need to shield their applications from portability challenges. Unfortunately, the adage that "the nice thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from" is even more applicable today than it was a decade ago. There are now dozens of different OS platforms used in commercial, academic, and governmental projects, and the number of permutations grows with each new version and variant.

We've developed many multiplatform, concurrent, and networked systems for the past two decades. We can therefore assure you that OS vendors often choose to implement different standards at different times. Moreover, standards change and evolve. It's likely that you'll work on multiple platforms that implement different standards in different ways at different times. Programming directly to OS APIs therefore yields the following two problems:

  • It's error-prone since native OS APIs written in C often lack typesafe, portable, reentrant, and extensible system function interfaces and function libraries. For example, endpoints of communication in the widely used Sockets API (discussed in Chapter 2) are identified via weakly typed integer or pointer I/O handles, which increase the likelihood of subtle programming errors at run-time.
  • It encourages inadequate design techniques since many networked applications written using OS APIs are based upon algorithmic design, rather than object-oriented design. Algorithmic design decomposes the structure of an application according to specific functional requirements, which are volatile and likely to evolve over time. This design paradigm therefore yields nonextensible software architectures that can't be customized rapidly to meet changing application requirements.
  • In this age of economic upheaval, deregulation, and stiff global competition, it's becoming prohibitively expensive and time consuming to develop applications entirely from scratch using native OS APIs and algorithmic design techniques.

If you've been developing networked software systems for many years, you may have learned to accept some of these problems as a fact of life. There is a better way, however. In this book, we show how C++ and ACE provide object-oriented capabilities that allow you to avoid many traps and pitfalls, while still leveraging standards--and even certain platform-specific features--whenever possible. Object-oriented designs exhibit greater stability over time than algorithmic designs, which makes them the preferred basis for developing many types of networked applications.

Not surprisingly, there's a price for all this flexibility: you may need to learn some new concepts, methods, patterns, tools, and development techniques. Depending on your background, this learning curve may be trivial or it may initially seem steep. The bottom line, however, is that the object-oriented paradigm can offer you a mature set of techniques that alleviates many challenges of networked application development. This book presents a series of concrete examples to illustrate the object-oriented techniques used to develop and apply the classes in the ACE toolkit. You can use the same techniques and ACE classes to simplify your own applications.

    Intended Audience

This book is intended for "hands-on" developers or advanced students interested in understanding the strategies and tactics of concurrent network programming using C++ and object-oriented design. We describe the key design dimensions, patterns, and principles needed to develop flexible and efficient concurrent networked applications quickly and easily. Our numerous C++ code examples reinforce the design concepts and illustrate concretely how to use the core classes in ACE right away. We also take you "behind the scenes" to understand how and why the IPC and concurrency mechanisms in the ACE toolkit are designed the way they are. This material will help to enhance your design skills and to apply C++ and patterns more effectively in your own object-oriented networked applications.

This book is not a comprehensive tutorial on object-oriented development, patterns, UML, C++, systems programming, or networking. We therefore assume readers of this book have some familiarity with the following topics:

    • Object-oriented design and programming techniques, for example, frameworks, patterns, modularity, information hiding, and modeling
    • Object-oriented notations and processes, such as the Unified Modeling Language (UML), eXtreme Programming, and the Rational Unified Process (RUP)
    • Fundamental C++ language features, such as classes, inheritance, dynamic binding, and parameterized types
    • Core systems programming mechanisms, such as event demultiplexing, process and thread management, virtual memory, and IPC mechanisms and APIs commonly available on UNIX and Win32 platforms
    • Networking terminology and concepts, such as TCP/IP, remote operation invocations, and client/server architectures

We encourage you to use the extensive bibliography to locate sources of information on topics about which you want to learn more.

This book is also not an ACE programmer's manual; that is, we don't explain every method of every class in ACE. For that level of detail we refer you to the extensive online ACE documentation, generated by Doxygen. at http://ace.ece.uci.edu/Doxygen/ and http://www.riverace.com/docs/. Instead, this book focuses on

    • The key concepts, patterns, and C++ features that shape the design of successful object-oriented networked applications and middleware and
    • The motivation behind, and basic usage of, the most commonly used ACE TCP/IP and concurrency wrapper facade classes
    Structure and Content

This book describes how C++ and middleware help address key challenges associated with developing networked applications. We review the core native OS mechanisms available on popular OS platforms and illustrate how C++ and patterns are applied in ACE to encapsulate these mechanisms in class library wrapper facades that improve application portability and robustness. The book's primary application example is a networked logging service that transfers log records from client applications to a logging server over TCP/IP. We use this service as a running example throughout the book to

    • Show concretely how C++ and ACE can help achieve efficient, predictable,
    • and scalable networked applications and
    • Demonstrate key design and implementation considerations and solutions that will arise when you develop your own concurrent object-oriented networked applications

The book is organized into 11 chapters as follows:

    • Introduction--Chapter 0 presents an introduction to C++ network programming. It starts by outlining the problem space and presenting the challenges that can arise when applications extend beyond a single thread in a single process. We then introduce a taxonomy of middleware layers and describe how host infrastructure middleware and the ACE toolkit can be applied to address common network programming challenges.
    • Part I--Chapters 1 through 4 outline communication design alternatives and describe the object-oriented techniques used in ACE to program OS IPC mechanisms effectively. The resulting classes form the basis of the first version of the book's running example, a networked logging service.
    • Part II--Chapters 5 through 10 outline concurrency design alternatives and describe the object-oriented techniques used in ACE to program OS concurrency mechanisms effectively.

Throughout Parts I and II we present a series of increasingly sophisticated implementations of our networked logging service to illustrate how the ACE IPC and concurrency wrapper facades can be applied in practice.

Appendix A summarizes the class design and implementation principles that underlie the ACE IPC and concurrency wrapper facades. Appendix B explains the inception and open-source evolution of ACE over the past decade and outlines where it's heading in the future. The book concludes with a glossary of technical terms (including the italicized terms in this book), an extensive list of references for further research, and a general subject index.

    Related Material

This book focuses on resolving complexity using specific C++ features, patterns, and ACE. The second volume in this series--C++ Network Programming: Systematic Reuse with ACE and Frameworks--extends our coverage to include object-oriented network programming frameworks provided by ACE. These frameworks reify common usage patterns of the ACE wrapper facade classes presented in this book to support broader, more extensible levels of systematic reuse. A distinguishing factor between the ACE wrapper facade classes covered in this book and the ACE framework classes covered in Volume 2 is that the ACE wrapper facade classes have few virtual methods, whereas the ACE framework classes have mostly virtual methods.

This book is based on ACE version 5.2, released in October 2001. The ACE software and all the sample applications described in our books are open-source and can be downloaded at http://ace.ece.uci.edu and http://www.riverace.com. These sites also contain a wealth of other material on ACE, such as tutorials, technical papers, and an overview of other ACE wrapper facades for IPC and synchronization mechanisms that aren't covered in this book. We encourage you to obtain a copy of ACE so you can follow along, see the actual ACE classes and frameworks in complete detail, and run the code examples interactively as you read through the book. Precompiled versions of ACE can also be purchased at a nominal cost from http://www.riverace.com.

    excellent notes on development experiences
    By Dr. Shahzad Aslam-Mir
I have worked on the development of large scale distributed networked systems for many years now, and have yet to see another so well organized text on the subject. It is an invaluable compendium that every network, distributed system, and application developer/programmer should keep handy.
It conveys, clearly, concisely and precisely a wealth of experiences from the development/coding trenches that is hard to come by and is rarely found in one place or even so well organized. The text enumerates in detail how issues faced during development were resolved in a manner that met a multitude of complex development criteria. The book breaks down ACE into a set of key crucial areas/modules, and then goes to work on each piece. It then surgically disects and explains the details of each line of code of the ACE toolkit and how and why the API's were developed the way they were and today what benefits and critical issues they solve as a result of those choices. I am eager to read the completed second volume.
I'd recommend this text to any and all students and practioners alike who are involved in distributed system (sockets, CORBA, RPC... etc with C++) development, even if they dont plan on using ACE, simply because of the high quality development advice and the way it makes one aware of pitfalls and issues that might and invariably do arise in large scale distributed systems development.

Essential tools for your use - Highly recommended!
    By Bruce R Trask
In the past, I have seen many posts on newsgroups from folks inquiring as to what *real world* C++ code is available for them to study so that they can learn *real-world* tools and techniques they can understand and thereafter really apply. ACE is such a body of code and this book does an excellent job of presenting what ACE is, what it does, how it does it, and, the part I like the most, WHY it does things the way it does.
I work with high performance distributed real-time embedded system factory automation equipment and network-enabled software defined radios. I remember diving into these areas of software for the first time and spending A LOT of time wrestling with the idiosyncrasies of the socket and threading APIs of not just one but a few operating systems. It wasn't until I started using the ACE classes and patterns described in this book that I was able to master these complexities and get on with solving the problem of the business domain for which the software was being written. This book does a great job of giving you not only the view of networked and concurrent applications from 30,000 feet (with the domain analysis of network application development and the resulting isolation of important design dimensions) but also the view from the battlefield trenches (with code that abstracts away the gory details of native operating system APIs) as well as the stuff in between (real life networked concurrent programming examples that bring it all together).
After reading the book, I definitely feel I have gained some invaluable experience from the authors' intense expertise with the gory details of and differences between operating system APIs. They explain these details and differences in a very clear fashion and then show how you can program more productively using the ACE classes that abstract away these platform differences, without loss of efficiency, as well as prevent you from making common nasty programming errors that could cost you hundreds of hours of debugging time. They explain, in full, the C++ techniques that ACE uses to achieve this. They explain not only how these techniques work but why they are used. I feel my expertise and judgment as a C++ network/concurrent programmer have increased greatly as a result of reading the book.
Despite the complexity of the subject matter, the authors' writing style enables you to absorb and understand the information at a very fast rate. I highly recommend this book for anybody involved with programming (you should know C++) as it captures the essence AND details of how a complex programming domain can be systematically and methodically tackled and a solution formulated and implemented effectively in real-world applications.

Great book on concurrent network programming
    By A Customer
Doug and Stephen did a great job writing this book (I only wish it came out earlier ;-). Everything is clearly explained, from analysis, to design patterns, to low-level implementation details with copious, well-written code examples. Even tho I've used ACE for several years now, I still learned many new things from reading this book, and it will continue to be a great reference. I particularly liked their explanation of trade-offs between various server concurrency stategies (eg: iterative, process-per-connection, thread-per-connection, etc), and ACE's design principles (appendix A).

The signature lighthearted and fast-paced narration features a large cast of characters, but very little exposition. Readers are advised to start with I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You (Hyperion, 2006). In this final series installment, Cammie is bent on uncovering a cabal of villains known as the Circle of Cavan. Using stolen plans from super-genius Liz, the Circle of Cavan is hoping to start World War III and it's up to the jet-setting Gallagher Girls to stop it. Cammie engages in a daring global game of cat and mouse, traveling to Rome, Marseille, and a hidden government compound in the Arctic, juggling conflicts with her mother and boyfriend Zach along the way. Fans will enjoy the touching graduation scene, which brings the series to a satisfying close.—Madigan McGillicuddy, Atlanta-Fulton Public Library, Atlanta, GA

A little disappointed with this one, but it was still a decent end to one of my favorite series from last year.
By Siiri @ Little Pieces of Imagination
This is another one that hurts to review, but not only because my friends loved this book and series, but also because I love this series. I pretty much binged the entire series in two weeks and it was ah-mazing! I loved it so much. I liked this book a lot too, but it also made me realize how flawed these books are and that's never a good thing to happen in the final installment.

I had finished book 5 right before I picked this up and book 5 was my favorite, favorite book in this series. It's such an emotional, fast-paced, dark and mysterious story which I loved. However, with this book, I felt as though the characters were a little juvenile? Everyone was keeping secrets from everyone: the kids didn't talk to the parents who didn't talk to the kids and everything was just a mess. There were some highly predictable things that happened, a lot of convenient things that were even more convenient than in previous books and, honestly, a lot of stupid decisions as well.

    SPOILERS

    ________________________

[First of all, why in the world did Cammie think it was Preston who wanted to talk to her? It never even crossed my mind that it would be Preston not his dad? @.@

Secondly, it's just so funny to me that these four girls and one guy are some sort of prodigies who can make everything okay and who can save the world when some of the kids' parents are titled as amazing spies and amazing agents and amazing everything; how come the parents weren't capable of doing anything except hide or do a few missions? Like???? How does that even make any sense?

Thirdly, the side characters are soooooooooo underdeveloped it actually hurts. One second Abby and Townsend are like strangers and the next they're all lovey dovey (in their sense, anyway). What about Rachel and Joe? One time they're just friends with a slight interest or layer of love between them and behind the scenes they got to be boyfriend and girlfriend and then suddenly it was a marriage proposal. Also, let alone that the sides are underdeveloped, Cammie and Zach just are a boyfriend and girlfriend, but there was no talks about how they actually became an official item. It's just.. understood. Ugh.

Finally, (though here are some more things), it felt like the girls hadn't really grown at all. Macey was throwing tantrums left and right, Bex was all murderous as always, Cammie is still the reckless girl she was back when and always acts without thinking. Of course, you can argue, that Cammie has grown a lot, and I think she has, too, but some things just brought back the Cammie-ness in the first half of the series and it was a bit disappointing =/ I mean.. I loved where they had gotten by the end of book five, but in this book they all seemed to have gone through some character regression or something. It was painful to watch how, under pressure, they just kept giving each other silent treatment or lashing out at one another. Aren't you supposed to be sisters and work as a team? I just wanted to shook some sense into them.

    ____________________

I guess my semi-disappointment also has to do with the fact that I had binged 6 books in a pretty short amount of time so it got a little repetitive and predictable, but.. regardless, this series is so amazing and I loved every second spent on reading it! I guess it's time to start collecting them in physical form sometime and have these pretty spines decorate my shelves ✿◔◡◔✿

This series is a definite recommendation for every booknerd out there!

Solid ending to a fun series
    By Cardinal
Boom! What a great start to the finale!
Book 6 of this fun series is action-packed with a fast-paced plot and a lot at stake. I felt very satisfied with the conclusion of this series in United We Spy. It's not easy to wrap up sub plots that have been brewing over 6 books and several years, but I felt like AC did a good job of it. I thought that the character progression was just right. Cammie and friends have been training for years and are now "adults" and making their own missions and plans for the future. Made total sense.

There are SPOILERS in what follows:*******************************

Couple of things I really appreciated:
    1) The fact that Zach and Cam did not have to actually profess their undying love to one another. I thought the sentiment that Cam felt, where she stated that when Zach talked about his future, that she felt like it was linked to her future, was perfect. It was subtle and just right for those two, in my opinion.
    2) That "evil bad guy" was actually briefly mentioned in book 1. I had been waiting for him to reappear -- and voila!
    3) Again, the wrap up of a lot of sub plots and the reappearance of Zach's friends. For some reason, I really was relieved to see that Zach was actually a dude with dude friends. Their presence served a purpose to the plot, but it did feel a little contrived. Still, I was glad to see them again.
    4) The fact that all girlfriends and everyone else did not have to pair off with a magically well-fitting soul mate.
    5) Loved the loss of the mansion. It was a little painful to read, but only because it really was a loss. I thought that was brave, and I liked that Zach didn't have to reconcile with Mommy Dearest, and chose Cam instead.

There were a couple of items that bothered me, but they were small things for the most part:
    1) "The ring". Seriously, when would Joe have had time to buy that? And if he had had time to buy it...seems like he could have been spending his time doing more important things. And honestly, Rachel felt a little like a giddy school girl when sharing the news with Cam. I'm happy for her, but... well, it seemed a tad weird and uncomfortable.
    2) "The return to the family home". While I appreciated the glimpse into the dire settings of Zach's childhood "home", it mostly felt like a plot device for them to find Mommy Dearest. And Abby's fit about not being told about Zach being Townsend Junior felt really out of character. What about showing some compassion toward Townsend -- or at a bare minimum, toward Zach? It felt selfish, and just did not feel like Abby. I imagined her as better than a jealous girlfriend.
    3) The humor hasn't been there for the last couple of books. I get the last one, but with Cam's return to her more normal, less psycho-Dr-Steve-controlled self, I was hoping to see more of the old Cam back. She was there a little bit, but I was hoping for more.
    4) I was really hoping to see Josh again. Oh well.

All said and done though, I enjoyed the series and would recommend it.

    A good finale
    By Katie Mc P
I've always liked this series, and books 2-3 were the highlight.

We all knew that the series would end with this book, and I think it did a good job with wrapping up the threads from previous books.

    What I liked:
-- The relationship between Zach and Cammie continues its natural curve. Their kisses get a little more involved, and they move into each other's arms more quickly and naturally, but I like that its still written briefly, rather than being overdone.
-- The pacing is very good, I thought, even though the whole thing was just a bit disjointed, almost as unrelated sections.
-- The plot threads are all finished neatly and 95% of it makes sense. (See below for that 5% that didn't.)
-- The whole series is very coherent together... but especially the books having to do with the Inner Circle.
-- This book is one more level of gritty than the last one. It wasn't too much... still a girly book... but it really does SHOW you that Cammie is 18, still partially teenager, but for the most part adult now. I thought the lists should have shown a bit more maturity than they did, but they at least showed some.

    ***Spoilers beyond this point ***

    What I didn't care for:
-- Zach and Cammie still never said, "I love you" to each other or gave each other any sort of a commitment. I am not a fan of teen (or adult) novels where those words are held cheaply. I don't like it when the author throws them in as sappy purple prose. I don't care for the example it sets when teens are saying it after mere weeks of knowing each other. It's even worse when the the words are used to make it "okay" for characters to get physical. Ally Carter avoided all of that, and I love that she avoided it all. BUT... neither am I a fan of books supporting the idea that teens can get all the way into passionate kisses like Zach and Cammie finally do without giving each other a commitment. They've been together years now, they've demonstrated commitment and they've been through some tough things, so it seems odd that they still never verbalized any sort of commitment. Especially with the series ending! It's like it must have happened off-screen somewhere. We should have seen it in the pages, though, even if it was just one or two paragraphs. A whispered "I love you" in between kisses. A quiet, "I'm not going anywhere. We belong together." SOMETHING. It doesn't really seem natural to me that it's so obviously missing, and I don't like the idea of a book that otherwise stands up to high moral standards skipping this important part of a relationship.
-- The plot did not make it clear enough in explaining the parts played by Ambassador Winters and the guy in the Cambridge library. One one hand... they are supposedly being targeted because they are part of the Inner Circle. But then both say they are afraid of what the Inner Circle wants to do, and they want it stopped. So are they NOT part of the Inner Circle? But if they're not, then it's not just the Inner Circle being targeted like the rest of the book seems to state. I just can't make heads or tails of that. If anyone reading this DID make sense out of it, then leave a comment, and if it's explained to me so it does make sense, I'll delete this portion of this review.
-- The relationship between Abby and Townsend wasn't portrayed very smoothly. Through the early books, I was constantly trying to figure out if Abby was supposed to be falling in love with Mr. Solomon or if Rachel was. In the beginning of this one, I still couldn't not tell which one was falling in love with him... and then Abby and Townsend are arguing in that "they might like each other way" in one scene... and suddenly Cammie's catching them kiss? Did I miss something?

All in all, though, it is a great book that I like sharing with my teen daughter.

She needs a hero - Very highly recommended
    By C. Penn
Search and rescue medic John Maitland found her clad in nothing more than street cloths at nine thousand feet in January. A cross-country skier had spotted her, resulting in a call to the Rocky Mountain Search and Rescue team. When she pulls a gun on him, John reminds himself that hypothermia can cause mental confusion. He doesn't yet see the bruises on her arms - or around her neck.
When the redhead wakes in the hospital, she suffers from amnesia. A scrap of paper in her pocket provides her only identification, Hannah. While she might not recall her name, family, or that she's pregnant, Hannah does recall a sense of danger. A fact confirmed when she's dismissed from the hospital to go to a shelter. As John drives her there, an SUV tries to run them off the road at a curve over a dangerous ravine.
Hannah must discover her identity and the father of her baby. Somewhere in her forgotten past lurks the key to life - or death. By the time John realizes the extent of the danger to himself in his association with the mysterious redhead, both physically and emotionally, he's in over his head. She effortlessly touches a part of him he's held isolated for thirteen years.
Linda Castillo's HERO TO HOLD earned a well-deserved Romantic Times TOP PICK award. With fast paced action and complex characterization, HERO TO HOLD will hold the reader riveted. Courageous and heroic, John Maitland fills every woman's desire for a hero. The perfect blend of romance and danger once again demonstrates this masterful storyteller's skill. Very highly recommended.

    Give me more!
    By Ree Ann Delaney
I don't usually read the smaller romance novels, but I was looking for something to read and picked up A Hero To Hold in the supermarket. All I can say is WOW! The action starts on the first page when the heroine is rescued off the face of a cliff by the hero who is a search and rescue medic and is lowered from a helicopter. Ms. Castillo did a superb job with the romance as well as the suspense and kept me thoroughly entertained. I finished the book this morning just as my husband was getting up to go to work! If you like lots of adventure and too-hot-to-handle romance, try one of Ms. Castillo's books.

This is one of her older books but as usual it is a good one.
The characters are great and the hero is as usual a rock. The woman is a independent sort and they sizzle together. If you like romance and action. you will like this book.

    About the Author
Simone Scarduzio Simone Scarduzio is a backend software engineer at MPme, a mobile music startup based at the heart of "silicon roundabout" in London. His current quest is to make the MPme music search and recommendation engine as feature-rich and snappy as possible. At MPme, it is a functional requirement for the core services to respond with a very low latency, regardless of the traffic. If this constraint were not respected, the system would send irrelevant recommendations to the clients. In terms of systems architecture, this means everything needs to scale horizontally. That's why, any mobile client connecting to MPme, actually connects to a Vert.x application. The use of Vert.x at MPme is massive and growing: reverse TCP proxies, Web radio monitors, and internal and external REST APIs are an example of this. He has been involved in the Vert.x project since October 2012, as an early adopter. Countless development versions of Vert.x have crossed MPme servers in a continuous cycle of build, test, deploy, and feedback to the Vert.x team. Before MPme, he lived for 3 years in Finland. Here, he cut his teeth as a software developer working on distributed mobile messages-processing systems at Mavenir, for customers such as Vodafone, Telefonica, Airtel, Idea, and T-Mobile. The pleasure of discovery and exploration drives his relationship with all his main hobbies: technology, travelling, and food.

the shortest you can go, possibly
    By Antonio Elena Batllo
(disclaimer): As in other occasions, Packt invited me to review this book for them.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the capabilities of vert.x, which I had heard mentioned but had not dabbled in it yet. Vert.x is an actor-like (heard of the actor model? akka, etc?) for single-threaded event-driven concurrent web applications, quite similar to node.js, but with the twist of being also a polyglot framework; you can work in javascript, jython, jruby, groovy etc (did I mention it is for the JVM?)

The book is probably the shortest you can get to deliver a meaningful payload. However, Simone, the author, manages to show some useful recipes starting from the very basics. It is basically a longish tutorial that highlights the principal value propositions of the framework, guiding the reader from the installation to several complete code examples ( one of which, at least in my pdf, had a mistake, but not one that could prevent you from following along).

So, all in all, not enough knowledge to jump into a serious production project, but enough to play with the framework and maybe test it in your company or free time (I saw they have a bigger book on the topic).

If you already have experience with node.js, then getting to speed on vert.x is piece of cake, but if you are not familiar yet with the ever growing reactive programming, event driven paradigm and so on, then this book will give you a taste and you surely will be hungry for more.

I enjoyed the book but I am removing one star because I honestly think the price is a bit steep for 50 pages.

Let down by mistakes in commands and code examples.
    By Mr. C. M. S. Dew
There are a too many mistakes, such as:

    sudo echo "export PATH=\$PATH:/opt/vertx/bin/" >> /etc/profile

on page 10, which gives an error: "bash: /etc/profile: Permission denied" due to the redirection not being done as root (sudo only gives root permissions to the execution of the binary, not the redirection of streams).

There is then a second mistake here, as in step three it makes a link to "/opt/vert.x", but here it uses "/opt/vertx/bin" as the path (note the mising dot).

If you know your way around Linux, you will get past these sorts of issues - but it does feel like sloppy editing.

The next error (if you're doing the Javascript track) is on page 13.

    var vertx = require(vertx); / 1 /
    var httpServer = vertx.createHttpServer(); / 2 /
    httpServer.listen(8080, localhost); / 3 /

Here, line 1 needs to have quotes around "vertx" and line 3 needs quotes around "localhost" to make the code work.

At this point I gave up - code samples in a beginner's book need to be tested thoroughly.

I hope PACKT will fix these issues, as the general approach and tone of the book is good - it's just let down by a lack of testing.

    Short and concise
    By Jonas Bandi
This is a short book (54 pages). As the name suggests, you can read it in "an instant" and it gets you bootstrapped into the world of Vert.x.

I liked the style of the book: it is short and concise and after reading it, you have a good overview over Vert.x as an application platform and the programming model that comes along with Vert.x.

However I have to note that the Vert.x project has a very nice online documentation. In my opinion the book goes not beyond the information that is also available online.

The advantage of the book is, that it structures the information in an easily digestible way that you can read in chunks offline. However I would have hoped for more "in-depth" information or some "best practices" how to use Vert.x in real projects.

If you have never heard of Vert.x, I can fully recommend "Instant Vert.x". If you have already played with Vert.x the book is probably not for you.
