Excellent resource specifically for web development in Clojure

I've been coding in OO languages knew nothing of Clojure or functional programming but heard great things about its concurrency, conciseness of lisp, easy access to the java library ecosystem.

There are a number of books on Clojure but none that focus specifically on how to build a website - i.e. setting up a http server, database connections, db queries, taking form, url or session params to get data from the db, etc. So this book was very helpful in quickly getting me building a guestbook with all these essential requirements for a website app.

What I found as I went through the book's example apps was how flexible and easy it is to switch libraries and that the Clojure library system is quite extensive. In the rare case one doesn't exist for your needs, you simply include a java lib.

You include libraries in your project.clj file and then in the root of your app in the terminal command line simply type 'lein ring server' and before firing up the web server lein automatically fetches and installs them in your app. Lein is akin to rake in Ruby on Rails and just as concise and user friendly.

The book walks you through building the example applications with the views in the Hiccup template language. In later chapters, the author shows you a walk through of how to do the same application with the Selmer template system which he created based on the django template design.

The author is quite prolific in his support of the Clojure community having contributed some key libraries, developed the Luminus web framework in Clojure and as one of the maintainers of lib-noir, one of the key Clojure libraries useful for building websites. I tried Luminus which is a Clojure web project template with a curated set of useful libraries.

With one command line in your terminal with lein Luminus generate a project template with either mysql or postgres, authentication and clojurescript if you desire it. Then you just enter your username and password for the database in the db config file to get up and running.

If I got stuck on anything, I was able to go to click on a link related to the example in the digital book which takes you to the publishers website to view the source code of the example. With the book you get access to a zip file that has source code versions for all the examples utilizing different libraries so you can see how they actually work.

There are even examples writing direct sql vs an orm. For example on the picture gallery app in the book there are 12 source code versions of the same app utilizing different libraries in the zip file.

A side effect of delving into Clojure with this book was that it made traditional object oriented code in other languages seem far simpler than before. It also sped up up my coding in other languages.

Functional programming with Clojure functions is quite different to object oriented programming, yet has a powerful simplicity once it clicks. As the author states in the intro, Clojure is a simple language to learn as there's very little syntax, and once you learn a handful of patterns you're quickly productive, typically within a couple of weeks.

The book takes you from creating your project application, installing the libraries of your choice, building your app and then deploying it stand alone, as a Tomcat servlet or in the cloud. There's also references to other useful libraries depending on your preference, so its quite flexible.

At the end of the book there's a section on the clojure language to get you productive enough to build web applications. I would say this book greatly simplifies the task of building web apps, luckily it exists as there is no other comprehensive resource specifically for building websites in Clojure.

One thing unique to Clojure is a real time REPL whereby your can see the results of your functions in real time in either an IDE called Light Table or IntelliJ. That helps you experiment and save time debugging as you're going along.

The book assumes you know nothing about Clojure and gets you seeing results right away. So I would highly recommend it to anyone using another language interested in exploring Clojure for skill expansion or greater performance and productivity.

Best on the market so far

The book is great and has a lot of useful information. Dmitry, also known as "yogthos" online, is very active in Clojure community and very helpful.

I would rate the book 5 stars but I can't. The author did a great job, no doubt about it, but Clojure web development is a bit hectic at the moment. I had to take a star off because I wish the book covered more technologies. There is just too much going on in Clojure, there is no single accepted way to develop web apps. Ruby, for example, has Rails and this is pretty much a defacto stack for the language. Clojure on the other hand has many different libraries and "no one true" web framework (Arachne is upcoming and we don't know much about it yet).

Dmitry focuses on Reagent for the front end, and he makes some safe choices for a back end (Postgres). But if we look around available web tools for Clojure then we'll see many many different technologies. Ask anybody who is using Clojure in production and chances are they all will have different tools. There is OM, Reagent, Rum, Hoplon, etc. Many templating languages. Various databases, including unique Datomic. And there are many ways to build an app in Clojure/ClojureScript.

So this is what I am getting at. Dmitry shows you how to build an app one way, his way, based on Luminus (the tool he wrote). But I am not saying that it's wrong in anyway, I just wish the book covered more technologies, that way a reader could choose what he likes best. And there are a lot of good and interesting stacks right now. Of course author couldn't explain everything in detail, it's not his fault, web development in Clojure has no unity and there is a lot going on. But here's the thing, if we had a book that covers most popular web stacks then it would be a 5 star. Perhaps in a 3rd edition Dmitry can build up on what he has and he can introduce more material.

Nonetheless, this book is probably the best one on the market right now that covers web development with Clojure from start to finish. It is similar to Hartl's tutorial about Ruby on Rails.

Great book for those interested in diving into Web Development with Clojure and Clojurescript. The book has plenty of examples and good explanations. It also goes through more specifics of the Luminous Web framework. I hesitate to Luminous a framework since it is more or a template to jump start your application with building blocks for different databases or front ends.

Overall this book was the best Web Development book for Clojure I have read!

Good enough. Worth having

This review pertains to the book with artwork by Rachel Isadora only. ISBN: 0-399-21336-8. For some reason, Amazon continues to publish this review under the wrong book, one that does not feature artwork by Rachel Isadora, even though I pointed this out to them.
This book is a verbatim retelling of the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale. The story is not embellished or changed in any way. The tale is illustrated with "luminous paintings, capturing the mood of a snowy Victorian winter..." (from the book jacket blurb).
Since the tale is only one and a half pages long, that makes for a slim book. The odd pages feature a paragraph of text , about three sentences, while the even pages feature a painting illustrating the text. About 13 paintings.
The book is hardcovered with two additional paintings, and you get a paper book cover mirroring those two paintings and the bonus blurb.
I can't see reading this story to a child. It's just too dismal. You can't read it without crying. It's an adult topic and an adult treatment. The powerful story is designed to make an adult think and reexamine his behaviour.
I rated the paintings with only three stars because they're good enough, but did not blow me away. The cover painting that you see here on the web site is a good example of the quality and style of the paintings.

Nobody Does it Better!

Like the author's other works, this is a highly meticulous and empirical study of the way contemporary Hollywood films function. Paying close attention to selected films by intensive frame analysis, Bordwell calls into question many contemporary "sibboleths" concerning the status of "post-Hollywood" which he reveals as having more connections with its classical counterpart than most critics believe. His attention to fine detail and references to "American Cinematographer" and screenwriting manuals reveal that he has really done his homework. He challenges his contemporaries to do likewise before they engage in problematic "post" judgements whether they be on the realm of postmodernism, post-colonialism, and post- anything which may become academic equivalents of those formerly fashionable platform shoes or flared trousers that often date episodes of the 1970s British cop series THE SWEENEY.

The references to contemporary Hong Kong cinema and analysis of films such as Johnny To's A HERO NEVER DIES are also valuable components of this book. Like DRAGNET's Sergeant Joe Friday, Bordwell insists that we supply facts based on viewing the evidence ourselves. We should not ignore important empirical aspects before we begin to make meanings that may eventually prove to be non-substantial. Those who choose to avoid the well-researched findings of this book should be issued with speeding tickets and forced to attend a scholarly version of "community service" or "boot camp" involving the detailed viewings of as many films as possible, reading interviews with film directors, and studying important journals such as AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHER. This is equally important for those newly converted "film experts" in English Departments of postmodernist persuasion who recently discover Laura Mulvey's 1975 essay on "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" and regard it as a "gospel" truth which remains unaltered today! These feelings are more akin to non-linguistic theological studies and not the highly textual, linguistic based explorations of biblical and near eastern studies that relay on studies in pre-semitic studies, Canaanite, Aramaic, and Arabic studies to reveal key empirical structures influencing "holy writ."

This is another indispensable work by an important scholar that every serious professor and student should learn from even if it only involves better interpretation and a more professional "making of meaning."

The definitive guide I've been looking for

This book is a treasure trove of information on the legendary sacred stone of the Southwest. If you're interested in authentic turquoise jewelry, this could help you make an informed purchase.

The photography is up-close and vivid and is used very effectively to make points and educate the reader.

Content covers the varying hues of turquoise and their significance – and what makes turquoise considered "treated" as opposed to natural and gemstone grade. The authors explain the processes behind reconstituted, stabilized, enhanced, waxed or oiled turquoise and imitation turquoise.

There are great descriptions of the output of the classic Southwest mines – with photos of their signature gemstones. There are also photos of Chinese turquoise, so you can see how easy it is to buy Chinese when what you want is Southwestern.

There are discussions of turquoise with matrix – intrusions from the host rock that create desirable patterns like the sought-after spider web matrix.

I was fascinated to learn that mine and matrix matter more than color in the value of turquoise.

Of all the books on turquoise I’ve read,I found this one by far the most useful.

A Treasure of a Book on Turquoise

Joe Dan Lowry is internationally known for his expertise in the field of turquoise. This Guide, written by him and his father, is small enough to be carried along when searching antique stores and galleries for turquoise purchases. The book is very helpful in describing the various grades of the major kinds of turquoise and the variables to be looked for when judging whether to buy a particular piece. In the end, of course, the authors suggest that you buy what "speaks" to you, but it doesn't hurt to know the indicators of quality since quality is related to the price you should pay. The Guide also describes treated and fake turquoise and cautions to "get it in writing" to protect from misrepresentations. The Guide is well illustrated and manages in so small a volume to provide some of the history of the use of turquoise in various mediums. There is a lot of information crammed into this little book. I find this Guide useful as I continue to become an informed turquoise shopper. You will, too.

Great Little Book with Gorgeous Photos, but Insufficient Information!

It seems to me that it's rather hard to find good information about turquoise, even if sought in person with folks who know it well. And there aren't too many books on turquoise either. This one looked the best, but I was a little disappointed with the brief content. The pictures are beautiful. There are some nice descriptions of the most famous mines. The book also contains some brief, but helpful information about the formation of turquoise, but the one thing it doesn't really do is help the beginner to learn to identify types of turquoise on their own, which really would be helpful. It's like turquoise identification is a SECRET. I so wish this author would write a second book with more in-depth identification information.

About the Author
Matt Kramer has been a full-time food and wine writer since 1976. His columns appear in every issue of Wine Spectator and Diversion magazines. He is also the longtime wine critic for The Oregonian and previously a wine columnist for The Los Angeles Times. Excellent and Entertaining Info on California Wine

Matt Kramer's New California Wine starts with a section that describes the thinking and mentalities behind the California wine industry (he named this part "Thinking California"). He then goes on to describe California's American Viticultural Areas (AVA) and different activities going on in each in a part named "Drinking California". He mentions quite a number of wineries - in ways that offer details that go beyond the usual, dry descriptions often found elsewhere. The "Thinking California" part of the book provides the reader with an excellent overview of the state of California wines - the thinking that has evolved the European wine mentality/tradition as opposed to the California approach to the crafting of fine wines. Kramer's writing style is quite entertaining - he's descriptive with word choices that vividly portray California. At the start of key parts of the book he sets the scene with a quote and then moves into descriptions that inform and entertain. In "Thinking California" his insights into changes and evolutions that have transpired in California wines through descriptions of the history, the wine plant, the climate, and the soil provide an overview helpful when thinking about California wines. In "Drinking California" he gives descriptions of areas (AVA) and different wine operations. Quite a lot of detail that I'll use when planning my next visit to California - the kind of detail one might want when doing advance planning - necessary when visiting wineries. As a native Californian who now lives in Europe I've tried to answer questions about California wines - what I've learned from Mr. Kramer gives an understanding of and a perspective about California wines that I'll find helpful. I'm glad I bought the book and consider its price to be a good investment.

I've read it, I've used it, I drank it (well, not really)

I have already nipped into this book several times, especially before trips to nearby Santa Barbara wine country, and Kramer has never steered me wrong yet. Based on his recommendations, I experienced some great wines at Foley and Longoria - not really a GUIDE BOOK per se, no fancy graphics or easy to turn to index pages, but Kramer does have his own wine guide for this. I highly recommend for wino-folks living right here on the left coast.

About the Author

Richard Kohls, a pioneer in agricultural marketing, is Emeritus Professor of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University. Born in 1921 in Kentland, Indiana, he received his degrees in Agricultural Economics from the University of Missouri and Purdue. He wrote the first edition of this pathbreaking book in 1955, when interest in agricultural marketing was beginning to increase. After teaching agricultural marketing for several years and conducting research and extension programs in the area, he served as Dean of Agriculture at Purdue from 1968 to 1980. Professor Kohls was awarded the American Agricultural Economics Association Outstanding Teacher Award in 1966.

Joe Uhl has been a professor of food marketing at Purdue University since 1966. He was born in Lima, Ohio in 1939. He teaches agricultural and food marketing classes, including the class that uses this text. He also counsels students and does research in food marketing. He served on the staff of the National Commission of Food Marketing in 1966, and he has lectured widely in Eastern Europe. He began collaborating with R. L. Kohls on this book in 1980. Professor Uhl has won both student counseling and teaching awards, the most recent for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching from the American Agricultural Economics Association in 1989.

This ninth edition represents an updating of Marketing of Agricultural Products, first published in 1955. As with previous editions, the goal has been to keep the text up to date with the real world in which food marketing students and managers find themselves. More than ever before, the appropriate organization and functioning of the world's food marketing system are of concern not only to those producers and marketing firms directly involved but to consumers and the general public as well. Increasingly, foreign trade in agricultural and food products ties domestic agricultural markets into the worldwide scene.

No book can be all things to all people. This book, like the previous editions, is written for those who are beginning their study of the food marketing system. It is designed for students who have had little or no previous contact with marketing or economics. The book presents the starting points for learning and discussion and leaves to the teacher the task of adjusting the levels of knowledge and achievement to the particular class involved. To aid in this, bibliographic references to key government and commercial references are supplied. It is hoped that these will encourage further study and call attention to the immense volume of marketing literature now available.

Textbooks are not novels! Learning requires work and discipline. However, it has been our pleasure over the years to hear students' and instructors' favorable comments on the readability of this book. Some of our colleagues have commented that it is too elementary and easy. This, however, we have accepted as a compliment rather than a criticism. Textbooks should be written for students, not our professional colleagues.

The approach of this edition continues that of earlier editions. It attempts to look at the food marketing system from several angles: the functional approach, the institutional approach, the micro-firm and macro-system approaches, and the commodity approach. Each of these approaches provides unique and complementary perspectives of the food industry. The book also blends the descriptive, analytical, and normative approaches to understanding the food marketing system.

New material has been added to update important market developments and events, particularly in the areas of vertical market coordination, risk management, farm policy, international trade and globalization, biotechnology, e-commerce, and value-added marketing strategies. Mini-cases have also been added to illustrate the controversial nature of food marketing and food marketing public policy concerns. There are also many new references to valuable public and private food marketing world wide web sites.

The objectives of the book continue to be to assist students and managers in understanding the structure and workings of the food marketing system, to examine how this system affects farmers, consumers, and middlemen, and to illustrate how this dynamic market system has responded to technological, social, economic, and political forces over time. The book reflects the adage, Nothing is changing, except everything.

While the focus of the book remains on the economics of the food system, there are liberal references to the social, political, and historical aspects of food marketing. The authors are aware of the use of this text throughout the world. The book emphasizes the U.S. food marketing system, but there are extensive references to marketing and market development in other countries.

In any book that has an extended history such as this one, many people have made valuable comments and suggestions for improvement. Not The Best Of Her Books

Liane Moriarty has become one of the authors whose books I automatically pick up. My previous experiences with her other books such as The Husband’s Secret and Big Little Lies has shown me a consistent level of great storytelling, intriguing plot and interesting characters. Moriarty’s Three Wishes is not any different in this regard. While the book remains consistent with what I would expect from Moriarty, I wouldn’t put it on the same level as with some of her other works.

Moriarty has a talent of creating some pretty unique and dramatic characters. In Three Wishes, you get a triple dose of these characters with the Kettle triplets: Cat, Lyn and Gemma. They each have their own distinct personalities that add to a close dysfunctional family. While I can appreciate their uniqueness, at times they can be a little too much for me. There are times where their quirks can be charming but more often than not, they tend to make me think they’re being a bit melodramatic while I’m rolling my eyes. And it usually happens these sisters are within a scene. There’s a certain chaos occurring in the scenes and I can’t help but think how they all need to be medicated.

When you have a favorite or go-to author whose works you’ve read it’s understandable that you won’t love them all equally and there are certain books that you like less than the others. Three Wishes is not one of Moriarty’s books that I’d put on an elevated level. While some of the plot points are a little out there (pushing the whole notion of coincidences to the limit), Moriarty’s writing and storytelling ability was able to put it all together to create a nice story about life, love and family

Not worth the money

It was okay for me, I did read it through to the end, but the characters just wore me out. They were all over the place, and the writing was really chaotic. I found it annoying with all the little flashbacks into various people's memories of the sisters when they were little, or college aged, or grown up...it was odd, to say the least. I probably won't read any more books by this author, I only read this one in the first place because it got some great reviews.

Not in the same league as the other books by this author

I have read all the books by Liane Moriarty and have enjoyed all of them thoroughly. This was the only one I had not read and I was very excited to have one left. Unfortunately, from the start I understood that it does not come close to the other ones and after a few pages I just gave up. I understand that this was her first book and from there it was all uphill. I know a new book of hers is coming up and I am sure i will love it as much as all the other ones.

Definitive work

This is by far the best work every on Hitler's secruity and the various assassination plots against him. It's especially strong in the early, seminal years of the Nazi party and there are some extremely rare photographs of Hitler in Munich in the mid to late 20's. Hoffman's research is extensive and he unearths material not found in other books. He relies on primary sources for many of his arguments and these interviews enhance an already strong book. If you have an interest in Hitler's incredible knack in evading assassinations, this is the preeminent book on that subject.

Excellent review of assassination attempts on Hitler and methods used to protect him

This book is an excellent review of not just the means used to protect Hitler from the time of his early ascendancy in the Nazi party to the famous, but failed, 20 July 1944 assassination attempt and foiled coup, to the end of his life in the bunker in Berlin, but also discloses that Hitler, more often than realized and especially in the early days of the Nazi party, was not afraid to put himself in harm's way to advance his cause. It also portrays the many ways in which security differed, depending on the circumstances (e.g., public forum, touring car, plane) and the many layers or levels of security, often unknowingly working at cross-purposes.
