Read It and Read It Again

After spending the last few years writing sexy romances as Jennifer Fulton, Fulton aka Rose Beecham has triumphantly returned to penning mysteries. With the award-winning Grave Silence, she mixes facts, surrounding the activities of the Fundamentalist Church of the Latter Day Saints (FLDS), with a riveting murder mystery and crafts a gripping story.

When we first meet Sheriff's Detective Jude Devine, a former FBI agent who has been transferred to a small Colorado town in the Four Corners area, she is unraveling the grisly murder of a young woman left decomposing in a desert wash. The clues to solving this crime take Devine and the reader on an unbelievable journey beyond anything we could have imagined. FLDS is a splinter group not recognized by the Mormon Church that among other things illegally practices polygamy. Beecham deftly weaves a second plot about life on an FLDS ranch into this story. We learn how autocracy and abuse rule the mostly underage girls married to the "master" of the cult, and how silence is used as a survival tool to avoid being punished for disobeying. As the book evolves, these two plots collide forcefully, taking the reader on a compelling adventure with Devine emerging as the silent hero.

After reading this book over eight months ago, this reviewer was haunted by the "facts" of Grave Silence. I wanted to know where the fiction ended, and the truth began. After hearing a talk by Beecham on how she compiled her research and gathered first-hand information about FLDS, I received my answers and was shocked. This is not a book where an author spews her views on religion disguised as a novel. FLDS is a cult that does not adhere to any tenets of any religion. Beecham has done a tremendous amount of in depth research to incorporate these facts into a fictional murder mystery, and the results are an amazing and fascinating book. The writing is tight and fluid. The path to the murder clues grows as the plot moves forward. Beecham strings her readers along cleverly, not releasing us until the final explosive ending.

After hearing Beecham speak about Grave Silence, I reread the book. If she had written a non-fiction account of this cult, I would not have believed the magnitude and far-reaching effects FLDS has on its victims, the young girls who are forced into this way of life by other adult family members. This fictional story, termed a "message mystery" by the author, cannot be ignored. It captures the reader and obliges us to look beyond our world. Beecham's telling helps us swallow the hard reality and reflect upon the importance of unmasking these groups. After reading Grave Silence, I suggest you take another glance. The implications of this novel are significant and cannot be overlooked.

(Beecham won a 2006 GCLS award in the mystery/thriller/adventure category for Grave Silence. In September 2006 Sleep of Reason, the second Jude Devine mystery, will be released.)

Rare Find in Lesbian Mysteries

It's rare to find a lesbian mystery that is better written and more compelling than most straight ones. Grave Silence exceeded every expectation I had. It's brilliantly researched, riveting to read, introduces a great new lesbian detective, and pulled me into a world so disturbing, I'm still thinking about it.

Rose Beecham combines a terrific crime drama with a blistering expose of a Mormon cult called the FLDS. I had never heard of these people until I read this book, so for educational reasons alone, Grave Silence is more important than most novels. It's also moving, memorable, powerful, funny, sexy, and the writing truly knocked my socks off.

Not only is Jude Devine a fascinating and hot hero, but there are some outstanding secondary characters - sensitive Deputy Tulley, the repulsive Naoma, and Adeline, the runaway "bride", just to name a few.

Beecham also runs several great sub-plots through the story. I can't wait for the next book to see what happens with Dr. Mercy Westmoreland, Chastity (please bring her back), Jude's missing brother, and the creepy white supremacists.

I normally don't get around to reviewing books, but I had to spread the word about this one. Grave Silence is exceptional. My hat's off to its author.

A welcome return by the author

It's good to see Rose Beecham back on the shelves. This is far better than her previous detective series (Amanda Valentine), and that's saying a lot.

This book is one of the rare books that I immediately begin re-reading as soon as I reach the end; it's that good.

Others have described the plot; I'll just add that not only do you learn more about a topic that you really wish weren't true (the plygs) but you have a helluva read.

All I can say to the author is "More!".

I really love the ogham and I've read a good few books ...

Something strange happened last night. I'd woken in the middle of the night and, while sleepily browsing on my phone, I dropped it and it purchased this book with one click. I had to work out how to cancel the accidental purchase. Which I did. But while waiting for the book to vanish from my kindle, I got so gripped by it that as soon as I had been reimbursed I bought it again.
I really love the ogham and I've read a good few books on the subject to support my practice, but in a few minutes this book convinced me that it's going to be my primary resource for a while.

I have ordered this book with great excitement. Living near Windsor Great Park I have grown up surrounded by ancient oaks and groves of beech trees. I have always felt a great affinity with the forest and know I have so much to learn from the trees that live there. I know this book will help me listen and hear their voices with greater clarity.

A very important contribution to the study of Ogham

Danu Forest's latest book is a winner. Ogham is a notoriously tricky oracle to write about, and it is always diffficult to satisfy the various needs and interests people may have when they come to it. It lacks the sort of dependable and comprehensible early sources to draw upon that even the Norse and Saxon runes have in the form of the various Rune poems, and much regarding the meanings of the fews is necessarily speculative.

That being said, Danu Forest has put together a wonderful range of ideas, sources, and excellent information about the trees themselves which helps tease out the essential meaning and nature of each few. Celtic Tree Magic: Ogham Lore and Druid Mysteries is one of the very few books I have read on the ogham which I consider wise, informed and credible.

Muy bien escrito. Presenta las voces de mucha gente que experimentaron el terremoto en Mexico D.F. en septiembre 1985. Hay testimonios de personas quienes estaban atrapados abajo de los escombros por 2 o 3 dias. Ademas, estan las voces de personas quienes tuvieron que buscar y buscar los cuerpos de sus familiares, primero en los escombros y despues entre cientos de cadavares de personas quienes murieron en aquel terremoto terrible. Muy bien hecho. Muchos testimonios conmovedores, muy emocionantes y elocuentes.

The Dutch scholar, Tjeu van den Berg, has written a brilliant summary of all that C.G. Jung wrote about art and the creative process that lies behind the making of art. More than that, he offers a coherent depth psychological theory of art based on Jung's writings. He is conversant with the secondary literature on this topic but does not rely on it. Rather, he bases his observations on the original writings of Jung and weaves them together into a coherent account. This work is highly readable by non-specialists and offers anyone interested in the creative process valuable insights. For the ordinary art fan and appreciator, it opens the eyes to deeper dimensions of seeing and understanding. If one is going to read only one book on this topic. this is the book to have.

excellent overview

I am fairly conversant with Jung and found this book to be a thorough overview of Jung's views on art in general. There is an analysis of abstract art in the last few chapters which are penetrating and though Jung did not like abstraction he made many penetrating comments on its relevance to the modern world. The reader will benefit if there is interest in Analytical Psychology.

This is an extraordinary book! I ordered it and expected it to be long and boring, but it was very informative and tells the world how privacy is a national issue around the world. Jacqueline Klosek has also written 2 other books entitled "The Legal Guide to E-business" and "Data Privacy in the Information Age", which I would also highly recommend.

Lessons Still Being Learned

With Iraq War: Strategy, Tactics, and Military Lessons, Anthony Cordesman has produced the most throughly researched work to date on this subject. Thoroughly sourced (although not indexed), Cordesman provides a near-encyclopedic view of the early phases of the Iraq war through mid-2003. This is not an easy read, dense, and often dry. But Cordesman offers a wealth of analysis and criticism.

Much has changed since this book's publication, and the proof of Cordesman's analysis is that his critique of what had gone wrong in 2003 and could go wrong in the future remains on target at the end of 2004. In particular, in the chapter "Conflict Termination, Peacemaking, and Nation Building," the list of 38 problems and failures (pp. 497-504) is a truly damning summary of the way the war has been managed to date. "Managed" not "fought" -- our military forces are doing their best, but have been placed in an impossible situation by the Bush administration.

Over and again, Cordesman returns to a key refrain: "...The U.S. military needs to fully accept that conflict termination, peacemaking, and nation building are as much a part of their mission as fighting. These must have the same priority as combat if terrorists and unstable countries are not to mutate, change tactics, and reemerge in a different form. No strategy for asymmetric warfare can be adequate that does not address these tasks as being as critical as the defeat of most enemy forces in battle.... The U.S. military did not learn this lesson from the first Gulf War, the Balkans, or Afghanistan."

Anthony Cordesman is no bomb thrower; in many ways he is the consummate think tank insider, and in fact, after laying out list after list of failures and problems over the course of 500 pages, he waffles near the end: "There is no way to predict how well the United States will do in the near term." On the contrary, when this book was published in September 2003, Cordesman had effectively made his predictions, and they are still coming true. The only thing upredictable is the final outcome.

Although I have not read it yet, I suspect that a more recent book by Cordesman, "The War after the War: Strategic Lessons of Iraq and Afghanistan" (June 2004, 96 pages) is the "lite" version, and may prove more readable for the reader who does not have the patience to wade through nearly 600 pages of sometimes dry analysis. But analysis it is, not unsubstantiated speculation or cant.

A thorough, information-laden presentation

The Iraq War: Strategy, Tactics, And Military Lessons is an extensive study of the second war against Saddam Hussein's regime. Expert military analyst Anthony Cordesman knowledgeably dissects the course of the war as well as the interaction of joint forces day by day. He then draws lessons from the forces' interactions and conduct as applied to army land forces, marine corps land forces, naval forces, including intelligence concerning weapons of mass destruction. A thorough, information-laden presentation, The Iraq War is a very highly recommended and timely addition to Military History reference collections and reading lists.
