Perfect Timing: How Isaac Murphy Became One of the World's Greatest Jockeys, by Patsi Trollinger

This picture-book biography, Trollinger's debut title, celebrates a legendary African American jockey. Using the jockey's "perfect timing" as a framework, Trollinger begins with a serendipitous moment, when Murphy was 12, that started his career. Off-track scenes, such as Murphy's marriage, appear, but Trollinger focuses on Murphy's rigorous training and the thrilling races, described in moment-by-moment detail. The straightforward text will read aloud well, and the subject will interest boys and girls alike. Lagarrigue's elegant paintings wonderfully enhance the story. As in his illustrations for Deborah Wiles' Freedom Summer (2000), for which he received the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award, the images reinforce the story's sense of looking back through time with blurred, abstract acrylics, which, like memories or historical stories, only capture part of the picture. Kids will be drawn particularly to scenes on the track, spiked with the color of bright silk uniforms, which evoke the speed and the excitement of both horse and rider. A note adds more historical context about African Americans in horse racing.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5–This picture-book biography describes how 12-year-old Murphy, the grandson of slaves, accepted a chance offer to ride a racehorse in 1873 in Lexington, KY, changing his life forever. He became one of the most successful jockeys in history, holding records that remain unbroken to this day. The exciting depiction of a match race in 1890, an event for just two horses and riders, concisely captures the action and drama of the sport. Trollinger's prose style is clear but not oversimplified, and she does not sidestep the issue of the eating disorder that led to Murphy's death at 35. An author's note explains that Murphy's perfect timing pertained not only to a horse race but also to his career. If he had raced 20 years earlier it would have been as a slave, and 20 years later, racial discrimination had forced most black jockeys out of racing. Lagarrigue's russet-hued oil paintings are vibrant and full of movement. This interesting biography is unique in its historical perspective on race relations and sports.–Ann Robinson, Moultonborough Academy Library, NH

Perfect Reading!
By Candie Moonshower
In PERFECT TIMING, Patsi Trollinger has succeeded in encapsulating the fascinating life of Isaac Murphy, the grandson of slaves--and one of the all-time winningest jockeys in the world. From his first ride on Volcano, which earned Isaac his place in jockey school, through his wins at racetracks around the United States, his marriage, an all-important match between Isaac (and a horse named Salvator) and a horse named Tenny, his struggles in his later years, and his death at the young age of thirty-five in 1896, PERFECT TIMING delivers. Paintings by Jerome Lagarrigue compliment the lively story--an all-around beautiful book! I recommend this picture book biography wholeheartedly!

Underdog Amazes the Horse Racing World
By Josephine
The story of Isaac Murphy is inspirational for all children but especially for children of African American heritage. This young man was a former slave who became a great jockey. His name continues to be in the record books even today! Children love the action involved with horse racing and are mesmerized by the lovely artwork. This is a must read historically and for pure enjoyment!

Drums of Autumn (The Outlander series), by Diana Gabaldon

In this breathtaking novel—rich in history and adventure—The New York Times bestselling author Diana Gabaldon continues the story of Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser that began with the now-classic novel Outlander and continued in Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager. Once again spanning continents and centuries, Diana Gabaldon has created a work of sheer passion and brilliance....

It began at an ancient Scottish stone circle. There, a doorway, open to a select few, leads into the past—or the grave. Dr. Claire Randall survived the extraordinary passage, not once but twice.

Her first trip swept her into the arms of Jamie Fraser, an eighteenth-century Scot whose love for her became a legend—a tale of tragic passion that ended with her return to the present to bear his child. Her second journey, two decades later, brought them together again in the American colonies. But Claire had left someone behind in the twentieth century—their daughter, Brianna....

Now Brianna has made a disturbing discovery that sends her to the circle of stones and a terrifying leap into the unknown. In search of her mother and the father she has never met, she is risking her own future to try to change history ... and to save their lives. But as Brianna plunges into an uncharted wilderness, a heartbreaking encounter may strand her forever in the past ... or root her in the place she should be, where her heart and soul belong....

Amazon.com Review
Set in pre-Revolutionary War America, readers finally have the much awaited fourth book in what will probably become a six book series (The Outlander series). The talented Diana Gabaldon continues Claire and Jamie's romantic love affair, and introduces Brianna and Roger's story. Eight hundred pages, and several wonderful new characters later, we wonder why we were waiting for a conclusion. It'll be a long wait for book five, so I recommend you go back and reread Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, and Voyager to keep yourself sane.

From Publishers Weekly
Gabaldon has few rivals in writing exciting?and hefty?historical romances. The fourth in a series of linked sagas (Outlander; Dragonfly in Amber; Voyager), her new epic has a delicious premise. Claire Randall, the post-WWII bride of historian Frank Randall, steps through a skew in the Scottish stone circle Craigh na Dun and lands in Revolutionary America and the arms of Highlander Jamie Fraser?putting a new spin on the notion of a two-timing woman. Bold and bawdy, but a believing Catholic, Claire struggles to live a rich and moral life?or, rather, rich and moral lives?under these extraordinary circumstances. Claire's adventures in 18th-century Charleston alternate with equally engaging chapters devoted to her 20th-century daughter, Brianna. Raised as Frank Randall's child, Bree discovers that Jamie Fraser is her real sire. She takes off on a harrowing, confrontational quest through time and space with her suitor, Roger Wakefield, in hot pursuit. Gabaldon's range is impressive, whether she's evoking the rawness of colonial America, the cozy clutter of a modern Scottish parsonage, the lusts of the body or the yearnings of the spirit. Her legion of fans will love diving into this ocean of romance. Major ad/promo; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club featured alternates; author tour.

From Library Journal
This fourth installment of the winning saga begun in Outlander (LJ 7/91) spotlights Brianna, the daughter of 18th-century Jamie and his time-traveling 20th-century wife, Claire, who joins her parents in the wilds of the Colonial Carolinas. Prompted by a desire to forestall the fatal fire she knows is their fate, Brianna is trailed as she leaps back in time and across the Atlantic by her historian boyfriend, Roger. Romantic complications, intrigue, and treachery ensue. Actor Geraldine James provides a graceful reading, but devoted fans of the series may feel shortchanged by the condensation of the 896-page novel (LJ 11/15/96) to a six-hour performance. Recommended for large audio collections.?Linda Bredengerd, Univ. of Pittsburgh Lib., Bradford, Pa.

Just as riveting as the first three!
By Tracie
After approx. 3600 pages of Gabaldon's books I am still yearning for more. Drums of Autumn is yet another fantastic addition to this series. This book is just as pleasing as the previous three, rich with imagery, historically interesting, along with the comfortable presence of Claire and Jamie that I have grown quite fond of throughout this series. Gabaldon continues to keep the story interesting by introducing new characters and saying good-bye to some, creating new drama, but also bringing back and reminding us of some characters from the previous books. This leaves you wanting more, knowing there is more to be told about all of these characters and how their lives will weave into the web of Jamie and Claire's.
The pace is a bit slower in this book (but by no means boring), this helped me slow down a bit, enjoy the language(s), revel in the imagery and prepare myself for the break I am now forced to take waiting for the next installment of Jamie and Claire, Brianna and Roger. I am left feeling "what will I read now?"
I highly recommend all of the books in this series to everyone. Gabaldon is a wonderful writer!

Definitely not as good as the 1st three
By K. Bourn
Ostensibly, "Drums of Autumn" is about reunions with fathers. Gabaldon, however, seems to meander about quite a bit before she remembers her theme. Although I didn't do an exact count, I agree with the reviewer who commented that the first 500 pages are terrible. "Drums" begins with Jamie and Claire attending the execution of one of Jamie's fellow inmates. Jamie and Claire, plus entourage, are heading to a Scottish settlement in Wilmington, North Carolina, where his aunt owns a plantation. The first half of the book mostly involves the mishaps on their journey north, life at the aunt's plantation, Jamie's debate over whether to strike out on his own or accept his aunt's generous offer, an adventure-filled trip to the wilderness, and ultimately, getting settled in a home in the new world.
While I don't want to suggest that all these events are mundane--this is Jamie and Claire Fraser we're talking about, after all--the events are very episodic. Gabaldon lacks any kind of overriding theme to organize the plot. In "Outlander," we had Claire's ultimate decision about whether to return to her 20th century life. In "Dragonfly in Amber," we had their attempt to prevent Culloden. In "Voyager," we first had Claire's search for records of what happened to Jamie, and later the search and rescue of Jamie's nephew Ian.
Also missing in "Drums" is a good villain. With the deaths of Jack Randall and Geillis Duncan, Gabaldon has to create a new bad guy or two. She does introduce her villains fairly early on--only their true malevolence does not become apparent until much later. In other words, unlike the way the threat of Jack Randall loomed in "Outlander," the threat of these villains seems to disappear when they initially disappear from the plot.
About halfway through "Drums," the Frasers' daughter, Brianna, who remains in the 20th century, discovers something about her parents' fate and decides to travel to the past to warn them. Her boyfriend, Roger Wakefield, follows her. Once Brianna and Roger wind up in the past, the plot tends to liven up, and the direction of the book also begins to make sense. Without revealing certain plot twists, I will note that certain events should create a sense of urgency to get certain issues resolved--and yet Gabaldon does not really leave the reader that worried about the potential outcomes. Gabaldon does manage a few nice little plot twists at the end, so keep going. Suffice to say that Roger has an interesting encounter with an ancestor, and Frank's influence comes into play.
Despite my tepid praise for this book, as historical romances go, it's still quite good--just not as good as the first three. One aspect that I appreciate about Gabaldon's books is that she does not overly romanticize the hardships and harsh living conditions of the past. She also deftly avoids overly sentimentalizing certain situations or going for the cliche. For instance, when Brianna meets her real father, at long last, after traveling through time and across the ocean, she first seems him behind a pub, urinating--not in some idealized encounter.
I'm crossing my fingers that "The Fiery Cross" is better, but I'm not optimistic.

This is the fourth in a series of what has been, until now, exceptionally well written time travel, adventure/romance books by the author. There are four such books published to date in what is anticipated to be a series of six books. Those of us who are hopelessly addicted to this series are awaiting the publication and release of book five, "The Fiery Cross".
I urge the reader to start at the beginning and read each and every one in the order in which it was written. Be not afraid of the length of each book. Trust me when I say that you will end up wishing that they were each longer, so riveting is the story that the author unfolds. Ms. Gabaldon is a master storyteller without compare, employing the superlative use of actual historical events with authentic period detail to weave a three dimensional tapestry of timeless love and adventure. While the core of the story is about a love that transcends time, it is an adventure story that holds the reader in its thrall.
The love that spans time is that which twentieth century Englishwoman, Claire Randall, has for eighteenth century Scottish highlands warrior, James Fraser. Those readers who have read the first book in the series, "Outlander", know that in 1945, Claire, a combat nurse during World War II, is reunited with her husband, Frank, after the war. While on a second honeymoon in Scotland, she visits a strange, flat topped hill, where a forbidding stone circle draws her. Touching one of the stones, she is hurled through a vortex in time and finds herself in eighteenth century Scotland, where she meets the brave and brawny, red headed Scot, James Fraser, with whom she falls head over heels in love. Finding herself thrust into the midst of clan warfare and intrigue, she and her beloved 'Jamie' have enough adventures to last a lifetime.
The second book, "Dragonfly in Amber", is a continuation of that story, told from the perspective of the twentieth century where Claire, now a doctor, has lived for the past twenty years. Upon the death of her twentieth century husband, Frank, Claire returns to Scotland with her grown, red headed daughter, Brianna. There she discloses to Brianna the events of her secret past, as well as the truth as to who Brianna's biological father truly is and of the love that Claire bore him.
While in Scotland, however, Claire discovers something that will change her future, as well as her past. You see, for the past twenty years Claire has mistakenly believed that her beloved 'Jamie' died in the historic battle of Culloden. It was there that the Scottish highlanders bravely fought the English in a misguided attempt to restore Charles Stuart, their bonnie Prince Charlie, to the English throne, only to be decimated on the battlefield. Those few who survived were branded as Jacobite traitors and imprisoned, and their families disenfranchised. It was this very event that Claire and 'Jamie' had conspired to change, only to fail.
Their story transports the reader from the turmoil of the Scottish highlands to the intrigue of the French Court and regales the reader with the adventures of the two lovers, as they conspire to change the very course of history. It was this valiant attempt that ultimately brought Claire and 'Jamie' to the crossroad that would compel these star crossed lovers to part and have Brianna become a denizen of the twentieth century.
In "Voyager", Claire, now realizing that the love of her life and soulmate survived the battle of Culloden, makes the decision to go back in time and find James Fraser, as she has not stopped loving or wanting him every waking moment for the past twenty years. Leaving her daughter, Brianna, she once more hurls herself into the vortex of time to eighteenth century Scotland to begin her search for James Fraser, in hopes of being reunited with her 'Jamie'.
"Voyager" tells the story of what happened to Claire Randall and James Fraser in those intervening years. It tells of their ultimate reunion and rediscovery. Against a backdrop of historical events and period detail and with a cast of unforgettable characters, it regales the reader with their new adventures, as Claire returns to a still divided, turmoil ridden Scotland. Reunited with Jamie, none the worse for wear, they seek to make a life for themselves. As their love comes full circle, they take to the high seas, and their adventures continue, captivating the reader once more.
In "Drums of Autumn", the story takes somewhat of a detour, as it begins to focus more on Brianna. Back in the twentieth century, Brianna and her boyfriend, Roger, a Scot and college history professor, as well as descendant of one of James Fraser's cousins from clan MacKenzie, each independently make a discovery that stuns them. Roger keeps it to himself, while Brianna acts upon it. The discovery involves an old news clipping which tells of Claire's and James' premature deaths in a house fire in pre-revolutionary, frontier America. Brianna makes the decision to go to the stone circle to try and go back in time to change the course of history and save her parents. She does not, however, tell Roger of her plans. Roger, discovering Brianna's deception, follows on her heels and, on that strange, flat topped hill in Scotland he, too, enters the stone circle and is himself hurled into the vortex of time.
Brianna and Roger catch up with each other in the eighteenth century only to be parted for a time, each having their own adventures. Claire and James by now are established homesteaders in North Carolina and are enjoying, what is for them, a relatively staid life. By the time Brianna catches up with them, an event has occurred in her life which may have the impact of forcing her to stay mired in the past.
This fourth book in the series is a bit of a disappointment, as it could have used some serious editing due to the author's self indulgence. Moreover, the characters are not so well drawn, as they are in the first three books in the series. Unfortunately, a pivotal character, that of Brianna, is uncharismatic and comes across as somewhat vapid and stupid. Brianna definitely needs work, if she is to capture the readers' imagination as have Claire and 'Jamie'. At the stage of development in which she is, Brianna would be unable to sustain another book. The same goes for Roger, who comes across as somewhat one dimensional, though he does have potential, as he seems to have a latent smoldering and sensual quality to his personality.
Still, notwithstanding some of these issues, this remains a compelling time travel saga, and my thirst for a fifth volume remains undiminished. I only hope that the lengthy time span between the fourth and the fifth volumes means that the author is working out some of the kinks in this new and developing direction which the series seems to be taking.

Thousands of years--way before Christopher Columbus set sail--wandering tribes of hunters made their way from Asia across the Bering land bridge to North America. They didn't know it, but they had discovered a New World. The First Americans is a fascinating re-creation of pre-Columbian Native American life, and it's an adventure of a lifetime! Hunt seals with the Inuit; harvest corn on a cliff-top mesa; hunt the mighty buffalo; and set sail with Leif Erickson, Columbus, and all the early great explorers--Cabot, Balboa, Ponce de Leon, Cortes, Henry the Navigator, and more--in this brilliantly told story of America before it was America.

The first volume in Joy Hakim's "A History of US"
By Lawrance Bernabo
A History of US is basically an attempt to write a juvenile history of the United States that will speak to a generation of young readers who get most of their information from computers and the Internet. That means Joy Hakim offers up lots of information with lots of illustrations, but it also means been very much aware of the mind set of her readers. When Hakim describes the scope "The First Americans: Prehistory-1600" we get a clear sense of this perspective: "This book begins in the Ice Age with some people who hiked and canoed from Asia to a New Land and, thousands of years later, got called Indians by Christopher Columbus, who didn't know where he was." This first volume begins with the first human beings crossing the land mass that once connected Asia and North America and ends with the defeat of the Spanish Armada, the event that signaled the beginning of the end of Spain's empire in the New World and the start of English colonization of the land that would become the United States.
The volume is basically divided into two main sections. After establishing the value of studying history, Hakim looks at how human beings crossed Beringia to a new continent and how these first Americans became Indians. The first section looks examines the Indians on a regional basis, from the Eskimos of the far north to the Cliff Dwellers of the southwest, as well as from the people of the Northwest coast and the Plains Indians to the Mound Builders and People of the Long House in the East. Chapter 13 is a transitional section that covers how the Vikings came to the New World. The rest of the book is devoted to the European voyagers of exploration to the Americans and the early colonization efforts of the Spanish and French. Consequently Hakim tells the stories of Columbus, Balboa, Magellan, Cortes, Ponce de Leon, and Coronado. The establishment of New Spain and New France is contrasted with the lost English colony of Roanoke.
Throughout the volume there are features on related topics from the Vikings at L'anse Aux Meadows and the first map to include "America," to stories of how the world began and how to ravel by canoe and portage, including excerpts from the writings of explorers Christopher Columbus and John White. The margins are crammed with additional information such as quotations, definitions, names to know, and even some jokes. The volume is illustrated with mostly historic etchings, drawings, and maps, as well as contemporary photographs of ancient sites and artifacts, (accurate) maps of voyages, and quotations from primary and secondary sources. The back of the volume offers a Chronology of Events, a list of More Books to Read, and a series of Maps: Old and New.
The strength of "The First Americans: Prehistory-1600" is that it is written as if it were actually being taught in a classroom. Hakim knows when to stop and explain the material, the same way a teacher would talk to their students about what they were reading. For example, she discusses the various names used to talk about the First Americans, pointing out that not even the Indians are really "native" Americans and then later addresses the question of what would have happened if Columbus had actually found Cathay as he expected. I can see why these volumes would be popular with parents who are home schooling their children, because Hakim is able to assume the role of teacher within the pages of her textbook (besides, I am not sure how many school districts can afford a 10-volume American history textbook or how many years it would take to get students to read them all). She also constantly asks her young readers to imagine themselves as specific people in particular situations to appreciate what it was like to live during these time periods, and I find such role-playing to be another key ingredient of computer life for young students in the 21st century.

All kids' books should be this good.
By Keith Cumpston
I thought my 4-year-old was only half listening as I read "The First Americans" to her sister (age 6). But the other evening at story time, her face lit up and she begged for "history"! I can give it no higher praise.
This volume covers the first 12,000 years--give or take a few millennia--of human life on our continent. Hakim strikes a good balance between outlining the broad sweep of the period, and focusing in on interesting stories, people, and trivia ("fun facts" in my girls' lingo). She doesn't gloss over difficult subjects, such as the massacre of the Aztecs by the Spaniards under Corts. But she relates these events with balance and sympathy, helping her young readers to understand them from different points of view (in this case the Aztecs; their neighbors who were victims of cruel Aztec rituals; and the Spaniards who wanted Aztec gold, but also were abhorred by Aztec viciousness towards their neighbors). What's more, Hakim openly invites them to think about and even reject her own judgements.
She has sparked many good conversations in our household. For instance, she used the example of Corts to illustrate some tough ethical questions that philosophers debate to this day. I talked about these questions with my daughters, and helped them to express and refine their own thoughts. Then I invited them to think up some other tough questions. My younger one took the cake with "what is 'is'?". She had offered it in jest, but to her surprise I pulled out "Being and Time", one of several big books on my shelf devoted to that very question. She was amused, but quite pleased.
No doubt you will find something to disagree with in this, as in any good history. When that happens, do what the author suggests: use it as an opportunity to debate her conclusions with your kids, and sharpen their critical skills. For the rest of it, enjoy a great story well-told. I can hardly imagine a better history for this age group.

Demonic Hunters
By Lynn Hill
This shows a level of the demonic that we all should be aware of. It shows how christians and people in general are blinded to the evilness in this world. It's mind boggling. It is dangerous not to be covered by the blood of Jesus.

a Revelation
By Channah
I must say that this book clarified a lot of questions I had. We definitely under estemate the enemy
and tend to forget that they exactly know how the universe works. God fearing christians ussualy steer
clear from astrology and anything to do with it or remotely sounds like it,
which is good. The enemy uses this however to his advantage
to keep christians in the dark about their destiny, their star in the sky and the star hunters who are out to
capture it. The enemy will do anything to prevent you from succeding. A good read.

The Design of Experiments: Statistical Principles for Practical Applications, by R. Mead

Describes the statistical principles of good experimental design, explaining that good design of experiments is crucial to the success of research. Emphasizing the logical principles of statistical design, Professor Mead employs a minimum of mathematics. Throughout he assumes that the large-scale analysis of data will be performed by computers and he thus devotes more attention to discussions of how all of the available information can be used to extract the clearest answers to many questions. The principles are illustrated with a wide range of examples drawn from medicine, agriculture, industry, and other disciplines. Numerous exercises are given to help the reader practice techniques and to appreciate the difference that good design of experiments can make to a scientific project.

PASTOR BINOCULARIS: NOW WE HAVE NO EXCUSE

Mead, Roger. 1988. The design of experiments: statistical principles for practical applications. Cambridge University Press, New York. xiv + 620 p. $130.00, ISBN: 0521-24512-5.

The news that Professor Mead had written a book on experimental design was exhilarating. There has long been a great need for a thorough, up-to-date, concept-focused textbook appropriate for teaching experimental design. Anyone familiar with Mead's incisive criticism of the neglect of experimental design in one of biologists' more revered statistics books (see Biometrics 38:863-864, 1982) or with his own unusually lucid introductory statistics textbook (Mead, R., and R. Curnow. 1983. Statistical methods in agriculture and experimental biology, Chapman and Hall) will anticipate with pleasure reading his attempt to fill this lacuna.

The book is simply superlative. It is a worthy successor to R. A. Fisher's The design of experiments and D. R. Cox's Planning of experiments and seems likely to be the contemporary classic in its field. It does not, in my opinion, have a close competitor.

The book is strongly focused on concepts and principles. These are presented with clarity, balance, and thoroughness. It is a book on design, not design and analysis, and its success derives in part from its intentionally reduced attention to statistical analysis. Experimental design cannot easily be discussed very deeply, however, without some reference to statistical analysis, and the author gives us just the right amount of it. This includes a 42-page chapter on "General principles of linear models for the analysis of experimental data."

Mead's discussions of statistical matters contain clear-headed advice on several topics that elsewhere are generally treated with much myopia, cant, and carelessness. These include log transformations, multiple comparison tests, and analysis of repeated measures experiments. Among Mead's comments on these topics are: "It should be assumed that data for continuous variables should be transformed to a log scale unless there is good reason to believe that this is unnecessary"; "I recommend ... that multiple comparison methods be avoided; that the idea of experiment-wise error rates be retained, but only as a general principle"; and "[for repeated measures designs] analyses may usefully be performed for each measurement time, [since the purpose is] to discover the important patterns of treatment variation or lack of variation so that a sensible overall interpretation can be achieved."

"What!", you say, "Above item number 1/2/3 is contrary to the advice I was given on my examination/thesis/manuscript last month by a colleague/professor/editor/anonymous reviewer! And it conflicts with much of what I see published in top journals such as E______y!"

Mead's comments on these topics are not as extensive as one would like. But in an understated way he helps bring out an important truth. The application of statistics in biology disconcertingly often reflects the interaction of blind sheep and half-sighted shepherds.

The design topics covered are fairly standard. The clarity and thoroughness of the book, not novelty of subject matter, are its greatest virtue. Nevertheless, there is much original material.

In a thought-provoking chapter on "Computers for analyzing experimental data," Mead discusses the nature and problems of canned programs, cites the need for development of "an interactive, user-friendly, statistically valid and comprehensive general package," and calls for "a complete reappraisal of the principles of experimental design without the restraints imposed by the limits of computational practice" which existed in the past.

In his chapter on "Replication," he devotes several pages to pseudoreplication (though without using that term), notes its frequency in the literature and shows, with examples, various ways in which it can come about. No other book on design does this so well. He does, however, slip into some terminology that, though common, is misleading. Multiple measurements made on a single experimental unit are implied to represent "false," not "useful," or not "proper" replication (pp. 111-113), or, in the equally inappropriate language of others, "pseudoreplicates." Such language is a confusing way to make the point that replicate measurements on a single unit cannot be treated as if they came from separate units. If statistical improprieties occur, they should be attributed to the analyst, not the measurement. Save the cuss words for the former!

The mere fact that the book has a chapter dedicated to "Replication" is itself revolutionary. The topic is so fundamental that one might expect every textbook on experimental design to have such a chapter. Yet of 12 other such books on my shelf not a single one does. Mead's chapters titled "Elementary ideas of treatment structure," "Blocking," and "Randomization" likewise reflect his unusual ability to see, and help the reader to see, the forest despite the trees.

The concepts of response design and the evaluation unit, both fairly new to experimental design (e.g., S. Urquhart. 1981. HortScience 16:621-627) and not presented by Mead, would have helped explicate some key ideas. Both the concepts and the terms are of considerable pedagogic value, and could have kept Mead from wrongly implying that, for example, unless successive repeated measurements are taken on exactly the same evaluation units, they cannotbe considered to have been "taken on exactly the same experimental units" (p. 408).

In his preface Mead states: "Understanding the fundamental concepts of design is essential for all research scientists involved in programmes of experimental work." Most scientists will find the statement unexceptional but also acknowledge that they themselves never had a course, or at least a good one, on the subject. What they did and didn't learn from "on-the-job training" and faculty advisors, however, is now sadly clear in the scientific literature. Lack of an excellent text on experimental design has always been one excuse. We no longer have it. Dismiss your old gurus and come walk with Pastor Binocularis.

Because this is the very best book on experimental design that has ever been written, it is unfortunate, though possibly appropriate, that it is also the most expensive. Regardless, the pit will rarely if ever be ordered in quantity as a course textbook, and sales will be one to two orders of magnitude lower than they might have been with a reasonable price. The rapid exhaustion of the first printing further supports the miscalculation hypothesis. A second printing, and a paperback edition, are promised.
