In the Dark on the Sunny Side tells the story of one such individual. Larry Baggett was main-streamed in school long before main-streaming was at all common. On almost every occasion he was the first blind person involved in whatever was going on the first blind student enrolled in the Orlando Public School System, the first blind student admitted to Davidson College, and the first blind doctoral student in mathematics at the University of Washington. Besides describing the various successes and failures Baggett experienced living in the dark on the sunny side, he displays in this volume his love of math and music by interspersing short musings on both topics, such as discussing how to figure out how many dominoes are in a set, the intricacies of jazz chord progressions, and the mysterious Comma of Pythagoras.

This book tells the story of a young American boy blinding himself by accident and ending up an internationally well-known expert on harmonic analysis and wavelet theory. Born in 1939 and becoming blind in 1944, the author experiences being one of the very first blind students main-streamed through the public school system, college, and university. The story is by and large a happy one and we are given many examples of relatives, friends, teachers, and strangers helping the blind boy, the blind adolescent or the blind man with all these practical things that are so self-evident to us seeing persons that we just take them for granted: how to find your way from one classroom to another in a school full of children running around, how to match the colors of your clothes, how to order from a menu, ow to find an empty seat in a seminar room, or how to travel to a conference. All these important details of life are commented on in a positive spirit. The author lives in a friendly world, even if that world is arranged for seeing people by seeing people.

All in all this is a nice book to read. It gives a hint at what it was like to grow up blind in America during the second half of the last century. It also gives a picture of how it is possible for a blind boy to become a world-famous expert in mathematics. Many will know Professor Lawrence (Larry) Baggett for his work on harmonic analysis, wavelet theory and unitary representations of groups. He is a world leading mathematician and has been for many decades. However, there is something you might not know about Larry, he is blind.

This book serves as Larry's memoirs, describing everything from his musical exploits and mathematical pursuits, to his personal life. Many of these moments, feelings and activities have been experienced by each of us, and often he describes a professional environment that lots of us are familiar with. However, Larry talks about them from a completely different, and in many cases, unique position.

Larry lost his sight after an accident with a paring knife at the age of five. But this did not hold him back; he went on to be the first blind student in the Orlando public school system, the first admitted to Davidson College, and the first taken on a a doctoral student in mathematics at the University of Washington. Larry is a teacher, and this exudes throughout the book, he never misses an opportunity to educate. Whether this be description and explanation of fun, classic, maths problems that crop up in anecdotes or some of the remarkable connections between mathematics and music. There is also considerable explanation of how Larry actually accomplishes a number of 'everyday' tasks, such as how Braille works and he reads, and writes music.

The book is written for the layman, and as such does not really delve into Larry's own research in any great detail. There are a couple of paragraphs of basic description towards the end but it is more of an autobiography of a blind man growing up in mid 20th century America, pushing boundaries, than that of a world class mathematician.

Throughout, this is a heart-warming and humorous book which I would recommend to all those who enjoy (auto) biographies. Larry's passions and interests are clear -- music, maths and his family --Sean Alvidge, Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications

This is a fascinating book. The author tells, in a very spontaneous way, about his life, both personal and professional. An accomplished and internationally renowned mathematician, Larry W. Baggett tells about vague memories of early childhood, before becoming blind after an accident when he was five years old. He tells about the adaptation to a new life and hs successful struggle to learn how to "see" being totally blind. He recalls the experience of riding school buses, of moving from one class to another during the school days. He mentions some teachers that marked his school years and vividly describes the growth of his pleasure and involvement with music, particularly jazz. He tells about his decision to go to the prestigious Davidson College in North Carolina. Very interesting his comments on the undergraduate mathematics courses, about the good professors he had and his decision for majoring in mathematics. Also about his decision to go to the University of Washington for graduate studies and his experiences as a teaching assistant. Then he tells about the early steps as a research mathematician, which culminated in a doctoral degree granted by the University of Washington after defending a thesis on "A description of topology on the dual spaces of certain locally compact groups." Then he comments on his successful academic career. Each step is described with interesting and critical comments on the trajectory of someone different in an established group of individuals. He tells about some attempts to recover his vision with high technology. Especially his experience with Optacon, an optical-to-tactile converter. All this is mixed with an account of his personal life, from the first marriage, of which he parented two girls, to the divorce and to the successful second marriage. We understand, reading the various chapters, why he dedicates the book to his second wife, using a brief but very strong sentence: To Christy, my light. Particularly moving are the description of his visits to museums and art galleries and how he describes colorful pictures, classic sculptures and architecture. The two final chapters, with very suggestive titles, 12. " The Rennaissance" and 13. "So how'd that all work out for you?", are a vivid narrative of his personal life and feelings. Larry Baggett received his PhD from the University of Washington in 1966 and was a faculty member at the University of Colorado, Boulder, from 1966 until 2006. He is the author or co-author of three books and over 60 research papers.

an instance of justified confidence

Baggett is a unusually intelligent person who, as a result of a self-inflicted wound, became blind at age five and learned to cope with the consequences. In large part, his success is the result of his confidence that he could do whatever anyone else could. Such confidence would have led to frustration and eventual failure for anyone less talented than Baggett. In this charmingly written account of his life, Baggett persuades the reader that it is possible for a blind person to live as rich a life as anybody else. Unfortunately, it is possible but not probable.

The book was published by the Mathematical Association of America. It is unconscionable for a non-profit, tax-exempt organization to be charging $50 for a 200 page book published from a pdf file prepared by the author.

A wonderful personal story sitting on top of a metaphorical iceberg

I cannot see how most people might not find this book amazing and inspiring. The other five star reviews of this book relate what one takes away from this book. However, this book also sets the stage for moving beyond typical discussions of disability and personal triumph in mathematics in ways that the author may not have anticipated. The public perception of mathematics is often quite oppressive, based on horrible school experiencesl, and conformity as imposed by standardized tests. In contrast, this books is a tip of an iceberg that indicates the diversity of professional mathematicians. I'm personally amazed by the number of blind world-class mathematicians from the last few centuries that have come to my attention. The public should note the development of Braille and the more recent accomplishments of blind programmers programmers and blind mathematicians who use Latex in ways that should inspire the rest of us. (Baggett has a chapter that touches on this).

If one feels that I'm talking about a "tail end of a distribution", I'd like to point out that I know of, for instance, no deaf mathematician on the level of achievement of several blind mathematicians that come to mind. This should seem ironic since blind students are typically turned away from mathematics at an early age because they "can't do arithmetic on paper". Decades after the myth of the "paperless office", we operate on centuries-old misconceptions about mathematics, and how we learn it, even in the face of exceptional people like Larrry Baggett. I'm so grateful this book has been written and I sincerely hope that the many stereotypes it shatters are dwarfed by questions educators and parents are compelled to consider. Ya got to love it!

About the Author
Herbert F. Ziegler is an associate professor of history at the University of Hawai'i. He has taught world history since 1980 and currently serves as director of the world history program at the University of Hawai'i. He also serves as book review editor of the Journal of World History. His interest in twentieth-century European social and political history led to the publication of Nazi Germany's New Aristocracy(1990). He is at present working on a study that explores from a global point of view the demographic trends of the past ten thousand years, along with their concomitant technological, economic, and social developments. His other current research project focuses on the application of complexity theory to a comparative study of societies and their internal dynamics.

Jerry H. Bentley was professor of history at the University of Hawai‘i and editor of the

Journal of World History. His research on the religious, moral, and political writings of

Renaissance humanists led to the publication of Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament

Scholarship in the Renaissance (Princeton, 1983) and Politics and Culture in Renaissance

Naples (Princeton, 1987). More recently, his research was concentrated on global history

and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction. His book Old World Encounters:

Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (New York, 1993) examines

processes of cultural exchange and religious conversion before the modern era, and his pamphlet

Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (Washington, D.C., 1996)

discusses the historiography of world history. His most recent publication is The Oxford

Handbook of World History (Oxford, 2011), and he served as a member of the editorial team

preparing the forthcoming Cambridge History of the World. Jerry Bentley passed away in

July 2012.

Heather E. Streets-Salter is department chair and director of world history programs at Northeastern University. She is the author of Marital Races: The Military, Martial Races, and Masculinity in British Imperial Culture, 1857-1914 (2004), Empires and Colonies in the Modern World: A Global Perspective (2015) with Trevor Getz, and Southeast Asia and the Frist World War (forthcoming 2016). Her current research focuses on communist and anti-communist networks in interwar East and Southeast Asia.

Awesome book. It will completely improve your understanding of USA and other societies starting from the Early Modern Period onward. I made the mistake of renting this book instead of buying it. BIG MISTAKE. This book is definitely worth the money. It is written in an engaging way and the photos and illustrations are gorgeous. I highly recommend this book.

As a non-tradional, older student I found this book to be very easy to follow and well written. Using this book in my World Civ course made history more interesting than it has ever been for me. Very good book and well worth the money.

The online companion is the real hero.

This textbook was required by my history class.

The reason for my 4-star review is because the online companion for this book is great! Not only do they have practice questions to make sure you understand the content, but it has an online version of the textbook with highlighted portions to show you the most important information from the section. If you don't buy this book new, the online companion is $75 for one year.

I no longer use my hard copy because of the online companion. Unless you really like having a hard copy or it is required that you have the physical book for your class, forgo buying this and just purchase the online companion.

All in all, the text in the book is simply put and easy to understand. I wish they had included more details about certain parts of history since I feel some important events were left out.

About the Author
As a licensed clinical psychologist, Candace V. Love, PhD, is passionate about helping women avoid narcissistic relationships. I highly recommend this book to anyone in a relationship with a narcissist!!

As an expert in domestic violence, I know that the connection between narcissists and both emotional abuse and physical violence is powerful. I use Dr. Love’s book in my lectures to health care and criminal justice professionals, the public, mediators, and divorce lawyers to show how to help friends, family, clients, or patients who are in relationships with narcissists. I’ve witnessed numerous audience members experience that “a-ha” moment when they recognize the signs of narcissism in a relationship in their own lives and realize how this knowledge and awareness can also serve them at work.
Dr. Love’s book is easy-to-read and packed with time-tested, practical advice to help you recognize the signs of a narcissistic relationship, understand how you got into it, and, most importantly, how to get out and break the cycle. Her guidance can be applied not only to romantic relationships but also to those at work, with a parent, or even a friend.
Such relationships are more common than most people realize. Over the last three months, nearly a dozen friends and family members have mentioned their dysfunctional relationships with narcissists. Many of them didn’t realize that it was their relationship causing their pain. I’ve told them each about this book, because I know it will help them recognize the patterns they’ve created in their lives and escape them.
Dealing with a narcissistic intimate partner is one of the most difficult relationships to recognize and extract oneself from. I work in the field of sexual abuse and assault. I will definitely recommend this book to my colleagues and friends. Narcissists are everywhere in our lives – in varying degrees. Whether you have found yourself in repeated unhealthy narcissistic relationships with an intimate partner, friend, or family member or only on occasion, this book will help you recognize and break free of these unhealthy relationships. Dr. Love’s approach is compassionate, empowering and realistic. She has structured the book to help a person identify personal characteristics that foster relationships with a narcissistic personality - without the blame that often accompanies such self-discovery. Through the use of helpful quizzes, checklists, and journaling she assists the reader to create a plan that will work for them to bring positive change into their life. Change is hard work - Dr. Love has written a book an individual can continually go back to and receive support for their journey. It's a guidebook to finding your voice in your relationships!

A must-read for anyone involved in a relationship with a narcissist.

This book is a must-read for anyone who has suffered in a relationship with a narcissist. In my 30 years as a clinical social worker, I have talked with countless people, usually women, who have struggled to understand the behavior of a narcissist. They have asked the questions "what's wrong with me?" and "what happened to the man I fell in love with?" Dr. Love's book helps the reader identify and understand both her own behavior and that of her narcissistic partner through a series of thought-provoking exercises and stories. Most who read this book will find themselves nodding their heads in understanding, and will experience that "light-bulb" moment when it becomes clear. Dr. Love walks with the reader on a journey of self-discovery, identifying the strengths that make it possible to move on from and never return to relationships with a narcissist. It's helpful to have a journey as you read and Dr. Love does frequent "check ins" with the use of "Your Looking Glass". The section entitled "Self Care: Becoming Your Own Fairy Godmother" was of particular interest to me. As a Reiki Master I understand the mind/body/spirit connection and Dr. Love beautifully ties this all together.
Thank you, Dr. Love, for this thoughtful and insightful work, and for sharing the stories of the many clients you have helped. This book is life-changing!!

A friend gave me both of these products - the Clinical Certified Transplant Nurse Exam Flashcards along with the CCTN Exam Secrets. I have used them both together and as I wrote on my review for the Exam Secrets, I ended up scoring in the highest percentile in my class. Very proud of that. I have a hard time with test anxiety, and felt that reduced after using the information given in these products. I felt well prepared for the test after using the flashcards for a couple of weeks, and probably could have prepared in far less time, if I had set aside a day or two for review, since the information was still so fresh in my mind. Having test anxiety though I'm a little ocd about being sure I'm prepared and have done everything ahead of time. For this reason I also doubly appreciate that they recommend a spaced out repetition for review. The material on the flashcards follows suite with the Practice Test Questions in the Exam Secrets book. The topics follow the same subject titles in the table of contents in the Exam Secrets book so that if you use them together, everything is very clear and easy to follow. Also, the information on the flashcards is thorough - in case the questions on the exam require more information, you're not getting one or two word answers on the flashcards. The answers on the flashcards provide plenty of information to draw from once you're answering actual exam questions. Very satisfied. Thanks again!

Flash cards for transplant nurses

Flash cards are a great way to study. They can be taken anywhere and studied any time. They also break up information so you can study a little at a time. It’s hard to believe that there are flash cards out there for transplant nurses to use for this exact test, but that’s exactly what this product is. These flash cards have all of the information on them that you need to know for this exact test. And even better yet, they don’t cost very much! These cards are easy to take around and they help you learn things in question form so you will be used to the way the material looks when you are sitting down and taking the test on the big day. The flash cards also help you study on the go and on your feet, which will prepare you to be a transplant nurse even further. As a transplant nurse, you’ll have to know the information when you need to know it. You may not be able to look things up. Studying here and there is a great way to practice for that type of experience. There are a lot of ways you could prepare for this test, but using these flash cards will give you advantages you could really use.

About the Author
Mustafa El-Amin was born in Newark, N.J. in 1957. He was introduced to, and accepted the teachings of the Nation of Islam, under the leadership of the Hon. Elijahh Muhammad, in 1972. Don't bother.

Waste of time for any knowledgable mason. Too much time wasted on symbolism. As we all know different symbols mean different things to different people. Are we really supposed to waste time reading about the dollar bill or the double headed eagle again?

This is a excellent book. I read this when I joined a prince hall freemasonry. Also I was to know that majority of Elijah Muhammad teachings is closely related to masonary and our ancient ancestors. I also suggest African Origins of Freemasonry by Zachary Gremillion, Huevolution Sacred Muur Science by Timothy Myers El, and Moorish Circle Seven by Keith Moore, Nile Valley Contributions to Civilizations by Anthony Browder, Also Dr Ben, GM jamse, C Williams Destruction of Black Civilizations.
