Comprehensive and mathematical treatment of digital video processing

Although published in 1995, this is still the book I come back to time and time again whenever I have a question about processing digital video. Unlike other titles, it is neither knee-deep in terse useless theory nor is it a book about which connector goes where in digital video. You might call it the Gonzalez & Woods of digital video processing, in honor of those authors' fabulous book on digital image processing. The book is organized into six parts:

Part 1- "Representation of Digital Video" consists of chapters 1 through 4. Chapter one is an introduction to both analog and digital video. Chapter 2 models the formation of time-varying images as perspective or orthographic projections of 3-D scenes with moving objects. Chapter 3 addresses the time-space sampling of 3-D lattices, which is what a progression of video frames actually is. Conversion between sampling structures without using motion information is tackled in chapter 4. This is the task of converting video from one format to another.

Part 2 - "Two Dimensional Motion Estimation" consists of chapters 5 through 8. Motion estimation is one of the most effective ways to utilize time redundancy in video frames, and this section discusses four ways to do this - optical flow, block-based methods, pel-recursive methods, and Bayesian methods.

Part 3 - "Three Dimensional Motion Estimation and Segmentation" consists of chapters 9 through 12. The models in this section can be used for either 3-D image analysis or for improved 2-D motion estimation. The two-view estimation techniques described in chapters 9 through 11 are based on optical flow and are very sensitive to small inaccuracies that are present. Thus the method of chapter 12 uses stereo pairs and motion tracking over long stereo sequences for more robust results.

Part 4 - "Video Filtering" consists of chapters 13 through 17. Video filtering differs from image filtering due to the motion information involved. Thus motion-compensated filtering is discussed in chapter 13. Motion-compensated filtering to reduce the graininess found in most "freeze-frame" images is discussed in chapter 14. Restoration of blurred video frames is the subject of chapter 15. Chapter 16 involves conversion between video standards and discusses frame/field up/down conversion and interlacing/deinterlacing techniques. Chapter 17 discusses a comprehensive model for low-resolution video acquisition and a framework for superresolution of video.

Parts 5 and 6, the remainder of the book, discuss still image compression and video compression respectively. These sections are detailed, but more recent developments in compression such as MPEG-4 and wavelets are omitted due to the age of the book.

The reader should already be familiar with image processing techniques as well as calculus, probability, matrix algebra, and some differential equations to get the most from this math-intensive book. However, the book is very detailed to the point that it is straight-forward to program solutions based on its contents. There are exercises at the conclusion of each chapter, but no solutions, since most of the exercises consist of essay-type questions or derivations. This seems odd since the book is very practical in its exposition, one would assume that the exercises would be more practical in scope. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in digital video processing.

Excellent book but require strong Math Background

This book is really good. Starting from the very first chapter, this book takes you into a very interesting world of digital video. It discusses MPEG video and the technology behind in some detail. This is for the people who want to know how digital video is created and the details about MPEG-2 video. The best part of the book is the Motion Estimation and Compensation portion...... Very high level of mathematical stuff is used in the book and hence will require some good reference books too....

didn't fulfill my expectations! if you are looking for a really really basic radiology textbook this might not be a bad idea,
but that's just it, it's too basic, maybe good for a student, not a good idea to purchase if you wanna strengthen your knowledge of radiology or wanna better understand radiology

Lila Quintero Weaver received her BA from New College at The University of Alabama. She and her husband,Paul, live in Northport, Alabama. Darkroom is her first book.

A remarkably detailed historical account

Lilo Quintero Weaver's understated and elegant memoir of growing up in the south during the upheaval and fast-moving changes of the Civil Rights era, told in Darkroom, is stunning, not only for its beautifully rendered imagery but also for its heartfelt text. This is a story told from a unique perspective. Weaver's family, having moved to the States in the `60s from Argentina, are outsiders somewhat to the racial divide they move into. And yet they are part of it as well. Where they fit, and how they fit, in this divided city defines them and makes them unwitting witnesses to a nation in turmoil.

Darkroom is a remarkably detailed historical account. Weaver began the book as an undergrad five years ago. Over time, she filled these pages not just with her own family's personal story, but also the story of the Civil Rights movement itself, told in pieces large and small.

There is much to give this story heft. Weaver wisely lets the story unfold slowly and without great fanfare, focusing instead on the human lives inside it.

Baby Boomers will enjoy this and want to share it with children and grandchildren

I grew up in the Sixties and spent time in the small Alabama town where the author lived. It was a time and place where teenage white boys addressed middle-aged black men by their first names and middle-aged black men addressed teenaged white boys as "siree." The author draws readers in with stark details. She pulls no punches while avoiding a temptation to throw stones. I've known all the types of people she described, in Marion and throughout the world.

I've often reflected on those times, that little town, in my formative years thinking I should write a book to try and explain it as much to myself perhaps as to my grandchildren. Reading Darkroom has helped me process my experiences from a unique perspective, neither that of a white person entrenched in the status quo, nor a black person struggling with American apartheid, but an embedded immigrant observer bearing witness to the darker side of our human condition.

This is an excellent book written and illustrated in the style of the graphic novel. The drawings are beautifully rendered charcoals drawn from 1st-hand experiences. Lila's spellbinding story and masterful drawings of her childhood in the Jim Crow south make the book difficult to put down. While the reading level would be appropriate for children in 4th-8th grade, it is also a great read for any adult or young adult. I highly recommend this book. As an educator, I feel books like Darkroom should be required reading during the middle grades.

READ THIS BEFORE BUYING

I was trying to be smart about my book buying, which I generally do very well for myself. However with this book and its publisher there is a very big problem. This book is designed so that you have to buy it new! Save for the fact you want to read it for entertainment or leisure purposes. They do this by having the student (assuming of course anyone who buys this textbook is a student), require not only a pass code, but also a work manual, DVD, and a pocketbook dictionary. Which by now you may have guessed most of which is usable only once! If you are to Google the Vista site directly you can find the items that come packaged new separately. But by the time you add it together you were better off just buying it new from the college bookstore or the vhldirect site! So save yourself time,headaches,and money and do not buy this textbook used , unless you just want something to read for leisure. I hope this helps!

Scum Publisher....

Do we really need a "revised" book for introductory Spanish every year? What are the revolutionary changes that are happening in the language that require American high school/college kids to take notice? Last time I checked, the past and future tense aren't being changed often.

Additionally, does the 200 dollar price tag justify a group of generally ridiculous on-line exercises? And here, I thought the technological advertising gimmick of a CD+Website had died in the late 90s, after it was proven utterly worthless.

This book is bought on the back of poor students for around 200 dollars, and is obsolete as soon as the purchase is completed. I will be recouping about 10% of the original purchase price, which only highlights the massive profit that the publisher must make from pillaging student's savings accounts.

These used copies are not worthless!!!

Section 133 of the Higher Education Opportunity Act took effect in July, 2010. It requires textbook publishers to offer "unbundled" copies of textbooks and supplemental material.

You can buy a used copy of a VHL textbook here at Amazon and then go to the Web site store (VHLDirect.com) and purchase the access codes, lab manuals, separately.

For example, if you find a used copy for $10 you can buy supersite access for $55 and spend just $65 instead of $139.

This is true for ANY bundled textbooks - like those bundled MyMathLab books. You can buy/rent/borrow the textbook and purchase standalone access to the site if your instructor requires it.

Also under Section 133, your college bookstore is REQUIRED to share the ISBN codes for assigned textbooks when you sign up for the class. You can quickly check to see that one section's instructor requires a $200 bundle and another section only requires a $58 textbook.

All students should use this information to push back on usurious textbook prices and bundles.

For the digital age badass electromechanical engineer

Circuit models for electrical machines served the E.E. community well (and our civilization!) for decades. In the hands of the skilled practitioner of circuit theory, they can become more accurate than they have any right to be. Take for example the induction motor (my preference-maybe an ocd thing!). Because of transformer action causing current to be induced in the rotor, it's modeled by a transformer! A few strategic resistances and reactances are put into the transformer circuit to leach off power due to eddy currents in iron cores, flux leakage, etc. Performance- just a few percentage points off! But still off and always will be. Circuit elements are static and cannot possibly subsume the physical process of the motor motion.
This book gives methods which are true to the physical construct of the machine and its operating physics. The programming/computer graphic savvy engineer could possibly develop his own simulation software from it's contents and run it on a gamer's laptop.
Magnetic flux density (B field vector) is approximated by finite elements (more accurate with finer mesh-you'll use the magnetic vector potential or rather find it in finite elements-B is the curl of this). Flux lines (vector field trajectories or integral curves of B) are plotted by using Euler's method or Runge-Kutta. All can be displayed on the pc screen for various time intervals.
Torque calculation is found using either virtual work or Maxwell's stress tensor(J.D.Jackson's text Classical Electrodynamics Third Edition for this) for induction motors. A Newton torque equation can be used in conjunction with this for rotor angular speed estimate(tricky for induction though). I recommend this book be bundled with a more qualitative design book like Design of Rotating Electrical Machines. Also you might bundle it with Finite Elements for Electrical Engineers for a more thorough presentation of finite elements. I should also like to add Analysis of Electric Machinery and Drive Systems (IEEE Press Series on Power Engineering) as this is the chief reference for reference-framing which is used to take account of motion as well as to simplify integrals, mutual inductances, etc. This in itself contains a significant portion of the operating physics. Strange and eerie...

The Lonely by Andrew Michael Hurley is certainly not what I expected. Promoted as a gothic horror novel, complete with an ecstatic blurb by Stephen King, The Lonely surprises because it really isn’t a horror tale. At least a horror tale that readers of the genre would expect. Reading the reviews on Amazon and Goodreads will clearly support this observation. While I am one of those horror fans, I must say that I was not disappointed in the novel. In fact, I found it suspenseful, original, and more than a little unnerving.
By now you know the plot. A family, accompanied by their Catholic priest, family friends, and other parishioners, travel to a desolate part of the UK for a retreat. The purpose of the retreat is to once and for all complete a ritual which will cure one of the family’s teenage sons who is stricken with autism (although I cannot recall if this diagnosis is ever revealed as such). The narrator is the young man’s younger brother who recounts the tale as it occurred nearly forty years ago.
The geographical depictions are a central part of the story. The atmosphere, complete with fog, rain, and constant overcast skies, is a character in itself. The damp and gloomy houses haunt the reader on every page. The dank chill is always evident. There is even an old mansion that is off the coast and only accessible during low tide. The gothic nature of the tale oozes constantly.
The natives resent the presence of the pilgrims. And, there is something not quite right about these people. There’s a hint of witchcraft and pagan rituals, and there are veiled threats towards the visitors. The author keeps explanations for the strange events just beyond our grasp, and the depiction of the climax is ambiguous enough that it may not be to everyone’s taste. All of the action is reported through the first person account of a fifteen-year-old​ boy, and his experientially-limited frame of reference adds to the mystery. Oh, and the visiting retreatants are conservative Catholics (this being the 1970’s). The depiction of their beliefs and rituals is so well done that the reader can’t help but observe that these also have a bizarre/pagan feel to them (and I’m a Catholic, so my reaction wasn’t due to unfamiliarity).
Anyhow, I really liked this book. But, be aware, it is not a traditional horror story. Those who disliked it often referred to it as boring. These folks were clearly expecting standard horror fare. It’s not. But it is eerie, strange, and atmospheric. If you’re in the mood, give it a shot.

More of promise than achievement

There is a lot to like in this book - a well-designed process of plot revelation and some fine observations of nature. But there's also a lot of box-ticking: island reached by regularly flooded causeway - tick; religious mania - tick; quaint but threatening rural customs - tick; a local yokel, vaguely sinister - tick. Still, there are a few tropes not followed through, and little things like the tea lights and the simnel cake reveal a wry humour that I wish there'd been more of.

I wish I could get back the time I wasted reading this

After plodding along forever in this slow, slow narrative, I was hoping to be rewarded by at least an interesting if not scary ending. However, the ending made no sense at all. The elderly priest in the family's parish who presumably killed himself did so because he lost his faith, and he lost his faith because he went to the beach, saw a dead body, and felt alone? Huh? And the mute, autistic boy, brother of the protagonist, apparently (I say apparently, since there were no details provided), sold his soul to the devil to become normal? How? How did he make this desire known? There were characters never fleshed out at all--the ones seemingly involved in black magic. Maybe if they had been, this storyline would have begun to make some sort of sense. I wish I could get back the time I wasted reading this.
