In developing his arguments, author Gary Dean Best focuses on the fact that the depression continued through eight years of the Roosevelt administration, despite unprecedented intervention by the federal government in the nation's economic life. Challenging conventional explanations that fault Roosevelt for not embracing Keynesian spending on a scale sufficient to produce recovery, Best finds the roots of America's slow return to economic health in Roosevelt's hostility to the very groups he should have been encouraging: the American business and financial communities.

Best provides one of the most careful and objective studies published to date on the actual effects of Roosevelt's policies and programs on American business operations and psychology. He reexamines the issue of why businessmen and bankers were so critical of the New Deal--criticisms that have been, until now, largely dismissed as motivated by greed and selfishness. He also asks how Roosevelt and his advisors could have hoped to produce an economic recovery when a state of near war existed between the administration and the employers and investors who, alone, could produce such a recovery. Using the letters and diaries of the New Deal's business and other critics during the decade as well as the writings in banking and business periodicals of the day and the criticisms of contemporary economists, including Keynes himself, Best offers a persuasive indictment of New Deal policies and a more realistic explanation of America's failure to recover from the depression before World War II than has yet been available. His work is an important counterweight to conventional evaluations of Roosevelt and the New Deal and should be required reading in any course dealing with the history and politics of the 1930s.

GARY DEAN BEST is Professor and Chair of the Department of History at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. He is also the author of To Free a People: American Jewish Leaders and the Jewish Problem in Europe, 1890-1914 (Greenwood Press, 1982) and The Politics of American Individualism: Herbert Hoover in Transition, 1918-1921 (Greenwood Press, 1975).

Stunning scholarship

Gary Dean Best convincingly argues that Roosevelt deliberately neglected to enact policies that would have restored business confidence and improved employment because he was determined to use the Depression as a path for establishing the federal government as the supreme power over the economy. Best does so by using the words and policies of FDR and his minions. A thorough researcher, Best makes use of primary sources from the FDR Library, for example, but his use of contemporary articles from Depression-era business periodicals is especially useful. This book leaves nothing to interpretation. Time and again Best demonstrates that Roosevelt and his administration deliberately prolonged the suffering of millions in order to gain political power. Given the choice between actions and words that would have spurred an economic recovery or actions and words that would have furthered "reform" (the suppression of the power of businessmen and the establishment of a centralized, ordered, planned economy centered around the redistribution of wealth and not its creation) the president chose "reform."
Roosevelt's policies and words never ended the Depression, never could, and were not designed to do so. His economic policies failed, and his refusal to enact policies that economic experts from academia and business agreed would have led to an economic recovery leave Roosevelt guilty for the massive suffering millions of Americans endured.
Furthermore, Best demonstrates conclusively that FDR was willfully ignorant regarding economics and business, and was spiteful, mean, and arrogant. He also makes a strong case that FDR desired to establish an American form of near-dictatorship centered around himself. What is more, a large portion of the American people (about 45 percent, as I recall) believed by about 1937 that Roosevelt had dictatorial ambitions.
Best crushes Roosevelt's reputation as a president and as a person.
I've read nearly a thousand history books and this is easily in the top five. Best has written a stunning, superb book that needs a wide readership. This scholar has single-handedly re-written the history of the Depression, the New Deal, and President Roosevelt. He did so by merely asking whether Roosevelt's policies generated positive effects, and by looking at the evidence--mainly Roosevelt's own, often shocking words.

Professor Best produces an array of primary sources to demonstrate that Roosevelt--by his persistent hostility to business--retarded recovery from the Great Depression throughout the 1930s. He uses poll data, quotations from the diaries and correspondence of Morgenthau and others, and newspaper reports to weave together a chilling but well documented account of how FDR retarded recovery and then further blamed businessmen when the economy stalled. Roosevelt, according to the documents, was astonishingly irrational and egotistical in philosophy, but very clever in using federal dollars to gain votes and perpetuate himself in office. This is a five star book.

The millions of working class Americans who immediately felt the relief of FDR's new deal policies don't need a "conservative perspective" on the subject. This is a dry and compromised narrative that was written only to supply a contrary viewpoint with little regard to actual fact.

A must-read for Customer Perspective in Balanced Scorecard

This book's concepts for strategic marketing management are so widely accepted that the popular Balanced Scorecard concept of Kaplan and Norton in 2001 decided to adopt the ideas for the "customer perspective".

The authors manage to take Michael Porter's two generic competitive strategies - Differentiation and Cost Leader - and elaborate on these to an extent never presented so elegantly before. In the process, they discover a third generic strategy - Customer Intimacy.

Thus, Treacy and Wiersema distinguish between focusing on the following value dimensions:
- Operational excellence (cost leadership / focus on supply chain management)
- Product leadership (innovation / focus on product lifecycle management)
- Customer Intimacy (service leadership /focus on customer relationship management)

These are the FOUR RULES that govern market leaders' actions:
Rule 1: Provide the best offering in the marketplace by excelling in a specific dimension of value
Rule 2: Maintain threshold standards on the other dimensions of value
Rule 3: Dominate your market by improving value year after year
Rule 4: Build a well-tuned operating model dedicated to delivering unmatched value

Common sense marketing perspective

Winning firms focus on one of three customer value disciplines: product leadership, customer intimacy, or operational excellence. Trying to be all things to everybody is tantamount to being nothing for anyone. If your firm can't get its act together, you'll find this an inspiring book that makes a compelling case that success is only possible by having the courage to focus on specific tasks & disciplines. This seems very elementary, but I've observed many firms that refused to choose what they wanted to be, ensuring that they became nothing. This book is helpful in positioning exercises.
I have two concerns about the book. 1, it doesn't need to be this long in order to get the central idea across. 2, I'm becoming increasingly convinced that this model is counterproductive in a Geoff Moore tornado period. If you're in a high-tech tornado, wait until Main Street before applying discipline.
Aside from these caveats, I still find the simple model presented in this book as being useful in analyzing market approaches. You have to understand the model in order to know when it isn't appropriate. Product Managers, sales, marketing and product development staff need to be aware of this book and its ideas.

I enjoyed conversing with her about the nuances and similarities between this "modern" textualization of the ways we describe the "rules" of English and the "old school" Latin-based grammars I came through (Does anyone remember Warriners anymore?). Thoughts of a Flatlander

This book was first published by Lyons & Burford (New York) in 1990. The first Anchor Books paperback edition was published in 1997. The book contains 11 essays that appeared in the 1980s in magazines, principally "Outside" or "Smithsonian." Essay #12 was written for the book. The essay titles are

As a flatlander unlikely ever to climb a soaring wall of ice-covered rock, I found Krakauer's stories gripping, like tales of life on another planet. Yes, there are people who seek out high, rough mountains, in freezing weather, & the author is one of them. The essays tell of his adventures & those of others who set out to conquer mountains from Alaska to the Alps to Mt. Everest.

Highly, highly recommended.

Another Great Read

Jon Krakauer brought around another great book.

The short story element of this book was part of the appeal. He covers a lot of different climbing aspects in one book, telling the stories that everyone wants to hear but hasn't yet heard. Krakauer definitely has his own literary voice, and it comes through here. While it's not as gripping as Into Thin Air, mostly because you don't invest as much into each short story, I was no less motivated to read. The most fascinating story of all of them was one of the last, when he went to Devils Thumb by himself. Loved that one above all.

Can't wait to read more from Krakauer!

The author includes short stories about various climbers and their experiences with various mountains. Each story was very interesting and I enjoyed every one. I hadn't heard of many of the people or mountains he described, but still found the articles fascinating.

Henrik B�rbak Christensen is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Aarhus, where he has been teaching advanced design and programming techniques for more than ten years to young students and seasoned developers. An interesting set of case studies and application of patterns in TDD (title is somewhat misleading)

I evaluated this book for my graduate class on advanced software design. I'm still ambivalent about making it a required text.

Strengths: Code examples in Java. Interesting reasoning of applying patterns, especially with respect to variability (a dimension I find is often minimized in many texts). Addresses iterative development with testing, with real examples and detailed analyses of risks. There are exercises, which are useful in a course environment. The reasoning for applying patterns (or not) is quite detailed. The projects (pay station software development) are realistic, although the problem domain might be more suited for people familiar with these devices (in Denmark). The Figure 1 in the "Tour of the book" gives a great map of the case studies, patterns, etc. It's easy to go to specific applications of patterns (the book is quite modular).

Weaknesses: When I compare its price to other books on Agile Design and OOD patterns (e.g. Craig Larman's UML 2 and Patterns from 2005), this book is overpriced (almost double the price). There's an eBook option (Kindle) but it's the same price as the hard cover (that doesn't encourage sustainable development). The author introduces a 3-2-1 method that is actually a new name for an old thing. He makes no reference to Protected Variations coined by Larman (which is the same as the 3-2) or Indirection (which is the 1), but oddly cites Larman on a less-important coining of "Don't talk to strangers" for the Law of Demeter pattern. Variability is a big part of this book, but I feel the author doesn't do a good job of showing who else contributed along these lines. The text refers to "stories" from XP, but there's little guidance on how to write stories (despite Agile being in the title). Reliability is also exagerrated. It's defined (borrowed from ISO 9126) but mostly this books is based on writing code that is bug-free via Test-Driven Development in Agile (good material, but not sufficient for true reliability). Reliability also concerns dealing with failures in the software that occur because of environmental problems, for example. This book is not about fault tolerance, even though Reliability in the title might imply it. Again, books such as Larman's address fault tolerance specifically and discuss patterns for achieving it through redundancy.

Good textbook for Hands-on Applications Programming class

I used this textbook for an upperclass Applications Programming course with approximately 15 students. The students and I enjoyed the book and found the material engaging, understandable, and helpful for developing good programming practices. The book is a good fit for a course which builds on previous courses in programming, data structures, and algorithms. It teaches students Test Driven Development, Design Patterns, and Software Lifecycle topics in the context of a significant hands-on programming project. It is well-suited to a team-oriented approach, and fits nicely into a series of two-week iterations in a 15 week semester, so students get a feel for an Agile Software Development process. The online Teacher Resources are very useful and useable, and include Lecture Slides, code examples, and suggestions for how the material should be used in several course formats.
