About the Author

Dr. Gill Robinson Hickman�is professor emerita in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, University of Richmond. An inaugural faculty member of the Jepson School, she participated in its institution building and course development and has held positions as dean, professor of Public Administration, and Human Resource director. She has published several books and numerous articles/book chapters in the field of leadership studies. Her experience has led to invitations as presenter at the China Executive Leadership Academy�Pudong (CELAP), Shanghai, China; the Leadership in Central Europe Conference at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic; and a panel member at international conferences in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Guadalajara, Mexico, and Canada. She was a faculty presenter at the prestigious Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg, Austria and at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa where she presented a conceptual framework for leadership and transformation for regional governments in South Africa.

This book expands Ellis's The Documentary Idea (1989), a classic history of English-language social documentary film and video. Here Ellis (Northwestern Univ.) partners with Betsy McLane (past president, University Film and Video Association) to bring the subject of documentary film forward into the global sphere of digital image-capture technologies, satellite and Internet distribution and exhibition, and the "frenzy of TV reality shows." Like the earlier edition, the book is homage to documentary pioneer John Grierson, who coined the term "documentary" in 1926, and largely limits itself to the English-language "social documentary," i.e., "the mainline of the documentary tradition Grierson set in motion." Within those parameters, each of the 18 chapters offers a concise and useful historical overview of a particular time period, topic, or filmmaker and adds a list of relevant film titles and publications. Soviet propaganda and European avant-garde experimentation are discussed, though less comprehensively. As a carefully considered and reader-friendly volume, this book takes its place alongside Erik Barnouw's classic Documentary (1974). Specialists and advanced scholars may prefer Michael Renov's The Subject of Documentary (CH, Feb'05, 42-3312), which reconsiders the Griersonian "objective" ideal in the light of the subjective practices of the autobiographical vernacular." Betsy A. McLane is the Project Director of "The American Documentary Showcase" a presentation of the U.S. Department of State Bureau and Education and Cultural Affairs. An Excellent Modern History of an Important and Influential Style of Film-making.

Not since Eric Barnouw's landmark survey, "Documentary, a History of the Non-Fiction Film" in 1993 has there been a better, more complete and up-to-date history of documentary film making. Betsy McLane not only covers the evolution of the form and craft from the first images that flickered with movement, she offers valuable information and insights to help readers enrich their understanding and appreciation of important non fiction films and understand changing styles and the issues they raise, as well as adding very human portraits of the passionate and committed men and women who devoted their careers to capturing the quicksilver of the real word and framing it on film. Including a short bibliography and filmography with each chapter, McLane organizes her material in a clear and usable fashion for both educators and the curious general public. As a veteran documentarian, I'm grateful for the invaluable contribution she's made to a greater appreciation of the importance of documentary film making, past, present, and especially the future.

Lacks depth - OK as an overview only

I was fairly disappointed by this book. Having experience in the product development field this offered me nothing new. I would only recommend this book to students who want an introductory book. Even then, the focus seemed more on the product development process and their are many books that cover this topic in greater depth. I didn't see much on how project management can be customized to fit the NPD process.

I have dissappointed with the hard cover book printed in black and white and withh no colored figures and graphics. I think the original of the book should be in colored printed form. So, the copy sent to me seems to be a photocopy. I wouldn't expect such a thing with Amazon.

Not a story for me, but it might be for you.

"Family Secrets," simply put, is not my type of story. I read just about anything, including erotica, but this story didn't interest me. With that said, I will do my best to give an honest review for the author. Ms. Wilcox obviously spent time doing research and developing her series. Her writing is very good - very few issues, if any, with grammar and such. Her characters are well developed and have a story to tell. Jen and Mark live a life very similar to many married couples. You could relate to these characters quite well if you have been married awhile. If you are into true erotica, this is definitely a series to pick up. The short story installments are great for when you are waiting and need a quick book. There are cliffhangers so be prepared to purchase the next book in the series.

Spicing things up

Layla does such a wonderful job on her books.

I loved Jen in this story. She was a bored house wife that needed more spice in her relationship. She was just uncertain how to get there. Her and her husband seem to work on a schedule. She never dreamed how much her life would change when she walked into the adult store called Secrets.

I think Blondie was the best thing that happen to Jen. She put her on the right track on the path of seducing her husband.

Mark had to be surprised to come home to a new Jen. There is not doubt that he loved her but to see her put forth the effort had to mean more to him then anything. There are some hot and steamy parts. This was a great short story.

Quick sexy read

There were parts of this book that had me grinning or laughing out loud because it sounded like me...lol
Jan feels like there is no spark left in her marriage anymore. So she takes a trip to a shopped called Secrets, to help her with all of the things she could need. Her first trip she is uncomfortable and the purchase she makes helps but isn't exactly what she was looking for. Her second trip there, an emotional release and some girl talk has her leaving the store with a bag full of goodies and a plan. She is having a complete make over in hopes of turning her husband on and bring the spark back into her life. Will this do the trick? Or is her husband not interested I. What she is offering?

There Is No Such Thing As A "Twin Flame"

There is no such thing as twin flames. It is a notion analogous to the fabulous beasts of legend and myth as well as heartbroken lovers with no other explanation of a broken romance, i.e., it is total chicanery. There are so many broken hearted souls everywhere looking for a cause an effect explanation of why their relationship did not work out that somebody came along with this inane and sensational rationale that somehow describes and accounts for their current misery as well as absorbs all the tears and disappointment embellished with the false hope of a reunion that never ever will occur. There is no such thing -as a "twin flame" face it- it is a broken romance that failed - accept the failure and move on. The so called "twin flame" did not want you and had better things to do with other people and that is all there is to it. You are not part of their life and never were- get over it, accept it and move on. YOU just were not it and never will be. Mourn and go forward.
