About the Author
Edwin Wilson, as a teacher, author, critic, and director, has worked in many aspects of theatre. Educated at Vanderbilt University, the University of Edinburgh, and Yale University, he received a Master of Fine Arts degree, as well as the first Doctor of Fine Arts degree awarded by the Yale Drama School. He has taught at Yale, Hofstra, Vanderbilt, Hunter College, and the CUNY Graduate Center. At Hunter he served as chair of the Department of Theatre and Film and head of the graduate theatre pro- gram. At CUNY he was the Executive Director of the Segal Theatre Center. He was the theatre critic for The Wall Street Journal for 22 years and edited and wrote the introduction for Shaw on Shakespeare. He is the author of The Theatre Experience and a coauthor, with Alvin Goldfarb, of Living Theatre, Theatre: The Lively Art, and as coeditor of The Anthology of Living Theatre, all published by McGraw-Hill. He has served as president of the New York Drama Critics’ Circle, as well as a member of the selection committees of the Pulitzer Prize in drama and the Tony awards. He is currently on the board of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and the John Golden Fund, and for many years was on the board of the Theatre Development Fund, of which he served as president. Wilson served as assistant to the producer for the film Lord of the Flies directed by Peter Brook and the Broadway play Big Fish, Little Fish directed by John Gielgud, was resident director for a season at the Barter Theatre in Virginia and the executive producer of the film The Nashville Sound. He co-produced the Broadway play Agatha Sue, I Love You, directed by George Abbott.

The still broader four-volume essay "The Nature of Order" was published 2002-2004 as magnum opus. The life work of Alexander is outstanding. He develops a general theory of living systems, a systems theory based on the concepts center, wholeness and transformation by using design patterns and pattern languages as parts of the method. There is a whole new cosmos of thinking with astonishing bandwidth: Alexander suggests a new scientific paradigm that stands in opposition to the traditional causal mechanistic paradigm of natural science – and he offers a new knowledge format as a way to enable people and support their participation in design processes. Alexander's theories have already proven useful in education, organizational development, permaculture, and in software the design patterns have even become mainstream. Many disciplines are about to follow in this development. Pattern theory allows us to change our thinking, to rethink our world and to move towards a fairer society. This leads to more participation and higher sustainability. Alexander's concepts form a mental toolbox for societal change and innovation.

An excellent and much needed introduction to this important topic.

This is an excellent and brief introduction to Patterns, and their applications to Architecture, Design, Software, and many other disciplines. The author comes from the software community, which has developed Pattern Theory much more than the architecture community, which is where Patterns originated. Leitner takes the Pattern design framework very seriously, and points out possible new applications that could organize scientific, social, and even religious thinking in a revolutionary manner. For readers who already know Christopher Alexander's book "A Pattern Language", I should explain that Leitner includes the later four-volume work "The Nature of Order" in what he labels "Pattern Theory". Thus, what we have here is an introduction to all of Alexander's work, and not just the original design patterns.

I own the original German edition of this book "Mustertheorie", which I have never been able to read because I don't speak German. But that book is popular in the German-speaking world, both among the software and architecture communities. It is very good to have the english version now available as well. One improvement is that the English edition includes Leitner's diagrams of Alexander's "Fifteen Fundamental Properties", which were not present in the German edition. I used those diagrams, with Leitner's permission, in my own book "Algorithmic Sustainable Design". The properties codify universal attributes of coherent form, with applications to a multitude of structures, physical as well as abstract ones.

The way we design things is evolving, yet in many applications, our society is stuck in a dead end. Recent human creations too often disconnect with nature, and depend upon a frightening waste of energy. New forces are pushing for a renewal of design education that brings in innovative material, and which makes possible true sustainability and resilience. We need a new set of authorities to provide those solutions, and Christopher Alexander is one of them. This book by Helmut Leitner is, in my opinion, on the list of essential readings for learning about the new direction in design thinking.

Executive summary of Alexander's ideas, impact and potential

This Fall, I will be teaching a course on "Philosophy of Technology" in Vilnius, Lithuania, or rather, I will be recreating it as a workshop on "philosophy and technology". Christopher Alexander is the most important thinker I will consider. He's the Plato or Kant of our times. But it truly is a challenge to encompass, present and apply his ever thought-provoking ideas. I'm grateful and impressed that Helmut Leitner has taken up this challenge to distill a short, clear, readable book of findings from 4,000 pages of Alexander's emotionally intense investigations. I can only judge from Leitner's table of contents and the excerpts I have read, but I think he has truly managed to survey Alexander's work in a comprehensive way. He has minimized the architectural points, and explained the significance of pattern languages in software development but also many other fields where they are finding application. I believe Leitner's affordable book is excellent as an executive summary and an entry point into Alexander's works but also an independent overview of the impact of his ideas. I also recommend books by urbanist Nikos Salingaros and the popularizations of Alexander's architectural ideas by Sarah Susanka and her "Not So Big House" series.

The best CCNA preparation book I've come across

After trying to prepare for the CCNA on my own I came to the conclusion that I needed a book if I were going to understand the material enough to receive my CCNA. Having seen Wendells books score high ratings I was going to purchase one of his until I read some of the excerpts from his book. With all due respect to Wendell his books were simply too dry for me. Then I checked out Lammle and discovered his books read as if somebody is actually talking to you, as if you're in a conversation with someone. Having purchased this book it's as immersive as reading a good story and you're learning the whole time.

Todd Lammle fully understands what Cisco expects you to know for your CCNA exam and the seller point for me is the fact that Lammle actually has a gift for teaching it. His book doesn't read as if hes just reguritating information to you but instead he writes to actually make sure you're understanding the material. (I've had professors in college teaching CCNA classes that couldn't do this. And for the record, this book is leaps and bounds better than any college class I've had on Cisco related information). Even if at some point he comes out of nowhere with new material he'll warn you about it and then he'll cover it later in depth. I have never at any point felt overwhelmed with the information in the book and he starts with the fundamentals, the building blocks of networking and goes in depth from there.

At the end of every chapter he'll have exam essays, written labs, and review questions to really make sure you understand the material (along with the CD provided). And to prove Todd wants you to know the material he even has a website you can go to and ask him questions on topics you don't fully understand, or if you feel he might be wrong about something in his book you can talk to him about it. If fact, if you check out other Lammle books on Amazon, you can see he comments on reviews left by others. That to me shows someone who's really dedicated to teaching the material and is someone I have a lot of respect for these days.

I absolutely recommend this study guide. You'll learn so much.

Author Very Helpful

I just wanted to say that I purchased the Kindle edition of this book and studied for about a month before I took the test. While I was working through one of the example simulations in the book, I was having difficulty getting the network to work correctly. I emailed the author, Mr. Lammle, and he responded back the same day with the answer. Since I had purchased the Kindle edition, I did not have all the bonus materials that came on the CD with the hardback. After I sent Mr. Lammle my receipt, he emailed me digital copies of all the extras. I passed the test on the first try. I just wanted to say that the book was thorough and complete and the author very helpful.

Different content in Kindle and Print 7th editions...

We determined that the print and Kindle copies of this book have different content. I know I'm "breaking the rules" with this review by referring to a previous review. I think it's justified in this case. Thanks to Daniel's review, we looked into the errors for answers for some problems in Chapter 5 and found the following:

1. Based on the published errata list at the Sybex site, the print copy I purchased in Dec 2011 is at least "print run 3".

2. As of Dec 2011, the Kindle edition is apparently equal to "print run 1". The copy Daniel downloaded has errors in answers to Chapter 5 problems, and the free sample I downloaded from Amazon has an error in the answers for a Chapter 1 problem. According to the errata at the Sybex site, both were fixed after print run 1.

So, regardless of whether you buy a Kindle copy or print copy of the 7th edition, check the errata at the Sybex site. Using the errata for the problems in Chapter 5 is a good way to determine what print run you have.

As for my review of the book's actual content - I think Lammle's book is much easier to read than Odom's two-book CCNA set, although I like Odom's better because he provides additional detail. If I could afford only one or the other, I'd buy Lammle's book. Be aware though, if you're a Linux or Mac gal or guy, that the programs he includes on CD are Windows-only. Haven't tried them with wine (the program...).

Best Trading "Psychology" book of ALL TIME...

I had to read this book SEVERAL times before I "got it." When I finally did, my reaction was, "That's It?!?!" The answer is SO SIMPLE. The implementation may be difficult for you but the ANSWER itself is quite SIMPLE...

This is probably the best book on the REQUIRED psychology for trading that I have ever read. If you don't like it, it may be "too simple" for you and the messaged may go over your head as "unimportant." Read it again. Think about EVERY paragraph. "Am I doing that?" "Do I feel that way?" "Is this true for me yet?"

Worth the read

This book won't provide nitty-gritty tips, but will give the reader plenty to think about when it comes to their own trading. Definitely worth reading. In fact, I printed out the following advice from the book just to keep reminding myself of the simple truths of trading: Never add to a loser; add to a winner only; let profits run; cut losses fast; don't pick tops; don't pick bottoms; go with the trend. Yes, these are basic things, but as the book points out, it's important to review the basics every once in a while to keep from straying off the correct path.

It is the all-time 2nd best book for daytraders.

I train daytraders for a living, I make them read 2 books before they start: 'Reminiscences of a Stock Operator' and this book 'Zen in the Markets.' I quote it almost daily when instructing traders - Trade what you see, not what you think. It is a very quick read.

It is NOT for long-term stock investors, anyone reading it for those purposes will be disappointed and give it a negative review about how it downplays fundamentals, charts, technical patterns, and such. Short-term (like 1-2 minute in a trade) daytraders and pit traders are the ones who swear by this book, as I do. I traded on the floor of the exchange and still make my living in the quick in-and-out daytrading world, and for people like me this book is a must have.

This book has a lot of good information in it

This book has a lot of good information in it, but it terribly hampered by the horrible illustrations. this would likely be a 5 star book if only the author had taken the time to either hire a professional artist so you could see the illustrations more clearly, or had taken photos of actual human beings performing the techniques. I agree with the one star reviewer in that the illustrations RUIN the book, but do think the content intellectually is pretty good. As a commenter said, the high reviews were not from verified purchasers so were likely fake reviews ! ! ! (And I'm not a 'verified purchaser' either, as I looked at many pages of the sample pages and saw (and am knowledgeable about Aikido, being a Sandan myself) that the illustrations were so bad you couldn't figure out what they were doing in many of the 'pictures.'

Very nice book. A lot of clear, concise illustrations, and good descriptions. Very well organized. Really easy to make sense of moves this way. A good book for reference, a good book to add to your collection.

A great introduction to RG and critical phenomena

This is a very pedagogical introduction to critical phenomena, and the techniques to study it. In particular, Ma really explains the conceptual aspects of the renormalization group, and provides enough steps in the calculations of some standard theories that you can fill in the lines. This book has really been my first exposure to this topic, and I am definately applying it in my graduate studies!

An Excellent Introduction to an Interesting Field

This is a great introduction to the modern theory of phase transitions. The typesetting, while dated, is not much of a distraction, and the text is remarkably clear and written for the autodidact in all of us. It starts out by describing the macroscopic theory of phase transitions created by Lev Landau, and draws what conclusions it can from the theory. It then analyzes the flaws in the theory, and makes a very good intuitive and mathematical arguement for the existence of the renormalization group, and starts drawing results from it. If you're interested in phase transitions and critical phenomena, this book is a must-have.

The most user-friendly introduction to renormalization, a classic

In this book, Ma explained every conceptual and technical detail of the renormalization group theory in first seven chapters. So far, this is the most understandable and well-written book on the topic I have read. A unique feature about the book is that the author reduced mathematical difficulty to a minimal amount, and focused more on basic ideas and physical arguments. The book may not cover as many topics as other book, but it was certainly a very enjoyable experience reading it.
