About the Author
David G. Kleinbaum is Associate Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health and holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina.

Lawrence L. Kupper is Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina School of Public Health and holds a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. Drs. Kleinbaum and Kupper have worked on the development of applications of statistical methods to epidemiology for over ten years. They have conducted several epidemiological research studies and published their work in Biometrics and the American Journal of Epidemiology, among others. Their short course on the subject of this book is in high demand in the U.S. and internationally. They are also the authors of Applied Regression Analysis (Duxbury Press, 1977).

Hal Morgenstern is Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the Yale University School of Public Health. Dr. Morgenstern’s work focuses on epidemiologic research methods and he has published extensively on the subject in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the International Journal of Epidemiology, Biometrics and the Journal of Community Health. Much of his research is applied to planning and policy issues, as well as to cardiovascular disease and to senile dementia. Dr. Morgenstern holds a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina, as well as degrees in Architecture from M.I.T. and in Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina.

This is a fine textbook, but I am compelled to respond to the first review. Nondifferential misclassification unfortunately does not always produce a bias towards the null. See more recent texts for details.

Obsolete text -- don't waste your time

Once upon a time this book may have been useful, but now this text is more than 20 years old and badly in need of a revision. You would be better off to read a more up-to-date work instead, such as the books by Rothman and Greenland, Clayton and Hills, or MacMahon and Trichopolos.

Phenomenal Book!

I read the authors' first emotional intelligence book, and I think that 2.0 is a huge improvement. Here's a chapter by chapter look at why:

FOREWORD BY PATRICK LENCIONI
Lencioni is one of those gurus that has sold millions of books, none about emotional intelligence (EQ). As Lencioni proclaims in the foreword, he's no EQ expert, but he sees everyday how critical a skill it is to have and he's so enthusiastic about this book because it's the first he's read that actually shows you how to increase your EQ and apply it in your life.

THE JOURNEY
This chapter opens with a riveting story of a surfer who is attacked by a great white shark in California. I won't spoil it by telling you how, but the story is a great illustration of the power of emotion and how important it is to understand and manage our emotions. This chapter also illustrates how our brains are wired to react to events emotionally before our reason kicks in, and it lays the groundwork for the process by which the rest of the book will teach you to increase your EQ.

THE BIG PICTURE
This chapter teaches what EQ is and what it isn't. For example, a lot of people mistakenly think that EQ is a part of your personality. To the contrary EQ is separate from your personality, just as it is separate from your intellect, or IQ. It begins to build your understanding of emotions by showing what the five core emotions look like in varying degrees of intensity. Next the authors fun and engaging approach explains studies that illustrate how important EQ is in daily living. They show how your EQ impacts things like your tolerance for change, how you manage stress, even how much money you make!

-DIGGING IN: MY EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE ACTION PLAN-
If you haven't already, by this point in the book you need to open the orange envelope inside the back cover and retrieve the unique passcode that lets you go online to take the Emotional Intelligence Appraisal test. I'd actually heard of this test (it's the most widely used EQ test out there), so I thought it was pretty cool that they let you take it for free with the book. In addition to revealing your EQ scores, your test results guide you through the areas you need to work on improving the most. This chapter helps you to develop your plan of attack, including the action plan where you actually record what it is your going to do and by when.

-SELF-MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES-
(ACTUALLY THERE IS A CHAPTER OF STRATEGIES FOR EACH SKILL, BUT I'LL JUST DESCRIBE THIS ONE)
This section of the book has 66 strategies to increase your EQ. Each strategy is well-detailed (most 2-3 pages) and something that you can begin doing immediately. Your test results tell you which EQ skill you need to work on the most (for me it was Self-management), as well as which of the chapter's strategies will increase your ability in that skill the most. I thought this part was pretty cool. Basically, the test analyzed my score profile and picked the three strategies that would improve my biggest weaknesses in self-management. One of the strategies it suggested, Breathe Right, hit the nail on the head. I'm not one of these people that needs to take a deep breath to calm down and stop being angry, which is good because that's NOT what the strategy is teaching. Actually, it illustrates how some of us, when left to our own devices, breathe too shallow, which deprives some of the higher (rational) areas of the brain of the oxygen needed to keep us completely calm and focused. So now, whenever I need to clear my head, think on my feet at work, make a tough decision, figure out what I should get my wife for her birthday, etc. I use this breathing strategy, and I'm continually amazed by how quickly it makes me calm and focused. Anyway, that's just one self-management strategy, but I thought it'd be useful for you to see what one is like in detail.

-EPILOGUE--JUST THE FACTS: A LOOK AT THE LATEST DISCOVERIES IN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE-
This epilogue is quite interesting. The authors' company is a think tank that has tested more than half a million people worldwide, and they share some of the more interesting conclusions from their data that didn't show up earlier in the book. For example, women outscore men in overall EQ, but the sexes have an equal ability in self-awareness (men fall short because they do less with the emotional information they take in). Anyhow, there are studies of EQ differences across various generations (Boomers vs. Millenials is really interesting), in different job titles (CEO's have the lowest EQ in the workforce!), and even US vs. China (our new, big economic competitor).

-DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR READING GROUPS-
This last appendix has some great questions for discussion. I'm not in a book club, but my wife read the book and we talked about some of these questions and it led to some really interesting discussions.

Enables Success

This book is unlike any I've ever come across in its ability to enable me to do great things. The book states that it has a single purpose--increasing my EQ--and it accomplished this without a hitch. How? It has a self-contained, step-by-step, program that was customized to my score profile after I went online and used the included pass code to access an emotional intelligence test. I learned which areas where holding me back and which of the book's 66 strategies would increase my emotional intelligence the most.

The strategies are broken down according to the four emotional intelligence skills:

* Self-Awareness
* Self-Management
* Social Awareness
* Relationship Management

The strategies continue to be really helpful. I catch myself using them all the time. Some are counterintuitive, while others are common sense yet hard to apply consistently until following the techniques from the book. The book also illustrates stories of real people with high or low emotional intelligence in each of the four skills.

I bought the book because of the Patrick Lencini foreword and the endorsements from some of my favorite authors (Stephen Covey, Ken Blanchard, and the Dalai Lama), and I'm glad I did!

Outstanding

I was very impressed with this book. It's the first I've seen that actually shows you how to increase your emotional intelligence, rather than just explaining what emotional intelligence is. It's filled with strategies to increase each of the four emotional intelligence skills: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. I found the strategies very helpful, particularly because the books gives access to an online test that (based upon your results) tells you which strategies will increase your EQ the most.

The authors use excellent anecdotes to illustrate various concepts, and their research is compelling and original. Some of the information on emotional intelligence and job title (e.g. CEOs have the lowest EQs in the workforce, on average), is very revealing. My favorite anecdote in the book is the riveting story of a surfer who survives a run in with a 5,000 pound great white, by using his emotional intelligence.

All in all, an outstanding read that's a great value at $13!

Dalton, ASLA, professor of landscape architecture at the University of Oklahoma The latest addition to McGraw-Hill's Portable Architecture Series, Landscape Architect's Portable Handbook, is a stripped-down, portable version of Harris and Dines's Time-Saver Standards for Landscape Architecture. The back cover describes the handbook in somewhat hyperbolic terms as "Providing a remarkable distillation of the entire profession...giv[ing] access to the 20% of the data you need 100 percent of the time." The handbook concentrates on what ought to be considered the traditional core of the profession as practiced in the private office in urban and suburban development listings. It is organized in a four-part format as an introductory chapter, appendix, and index. Part One provides information on pedestrian, vehicular, and community standards, among others. Part Two briefly reviews techniques for documentation and design of layout and surveying and grading. Part Three addresses the detailed information needed for such devices as paving, spaces, walls, and lighting. The final part reviews aspects of contract administration, including permitting. Given the emphasis on this as a field handbook for professionals, there are some inconsistencies in what is covered and what is not. The introductory chapter provides a framework for design addressing the range of scales from the very detailed up to regional-level planning. It is a marvelous piece and will be useful for beginning students, but it does not seem necessary given the intended use and audience for the handbook. In the same vein, there are chapters on basic grading design, layout, and surveying that many may find handy but that do not seem to be critical in a field handbook. The book is tightly organized, with many charts and tables judiciously supplemented with text, supplying information on standards for design, as well as critical data for basic landscape construction elements. The standards addressing recreation needs to be oriented toward traditional urban parks, play spaces, and field sports. However, if you need to find specific standards for green-way designs, such as minimum dimensions for equestrian trails, these are not there, although there is a chart articulating classification systems for trail design. The section on deck design is quite thorough, including detailed requirements for both public and private conditions, and beam tables that provide guidelines for doubling and tripling light framing lumber to create larger members. Strangely, though the design calculations for retaining walls are provided in full, none of the details or information addresses how to size and locate steel properly in the footings. There is good basic information on fences and walls, but absolutely nothing on gate design and structure. The section on stormwater will enable one to calculate runoff rate using the Modified Rational Method and runoff volume using the Schueler's Shortcut Method. Infiltration seems to be the focus for the devices illustrated, which include retention ponds for sediment removal, filter strips, subsurface sand filters, recharge trench, and bioretention ponds. However, there are no hard data or graphics on sizing inlets, pipes, and swales. Also, this is not the reference if one needs field-ready information for erosion and sedimentation control devices, since none are discussed or illustrated. The one flat-out error I found was in the surveying chapter, which describes the datum for latitude as the prime meridian in Greenwich, England. Regardless of the book's limitations, many professionals as well as students will find it quite useful, particularly as a condensed, portable, half-price version of Time-Saver Standards. I believe that the profession needs to continue discussions about the legitimate purview of the field as represented by the material covered in our construction handbooks and field guides. This is particularly important in light of recent challenges to landscape architectural licensure by allied fields such as civil engineering, which in a number of states have sought to limit the landscape architect's ability to prepare and stamp grading and drainge plans as well as to do sedimentation and erosion control work. About the Author
Nicholas T. Dines, FASLA, is a professor of landscape architecture and former director of the landscape architecture graduate program at the University of Massachusetts where for over 30 years, he has taught courses in site engineering, structures, design studio, design drawing, design theory, and professional practice. He is the co-editor of McGraw-Hill's Time-Saver Standards for Landscape Architecture; co-author of Time-Saver Standards for Landscape Construction Details CD, and its companion publication, Time-Saver Standards Concise Site Construction Details Manual; and author of, Landscape Perspective Drawing. He has over 32 years of professional experience, including a 10-year period of work on residential and recreational design projects in Greece. He currently is conducting research in multi-media applications to both professional and academic design and planning practices, with a special focus on site construction and sustainable design. He has a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and a MLA degree from Harvard University. His home is in Williamsburg, Massachusetts.

Not very useful

I bought this book with the hopes of having a reference that would limit my hours of google research and talking to other designers to try to find answers to common design issues. But for some reason, it seems to have all the information I'm not looking for, and none of the information I'm actually looking for! Buy Time Saver Standards instead. It's heavier and more expensive, but much more complete.

Good, general information for LA's and useful to study for the LARE exam, if you are in that emotionally draining state of mind! Some of the more plant-based facts are missing but general survey, administrative, and planning information is very useful stuff to have in a small booklike format.

Scale Victorian house plans and detail drawings.

This book, originally published in 1881, contains floorplans and elevations of several dozen Victorian houses. Some plans are possibly suitable for actual construction. As the accurate title implies there are many drawings of architectural details. All plans are drawn to scale, but have been reduced by 12%. This book is a must-have for fans of Victorian architecture or home builders that are looking for Victorian-style ideas

Details for DIYers or Modern Carpenters

This book offers plans for several gorgeous Victorian houses, and as such, is an excellent companion book to some of Dover's other architectural offerings. But as the author notes, the ". . . intention primarily was to make it a work of Architectural details . . ." House framing is laid out here, from sill plate to rafters. Back then they used balloon framing, so it's interesting to compare that to modern practices. But the best part of this book is the wealth of detail on a building's, well, details. You get a drawing showing how virtually every feature of a Victorian house if built, inside and out. You'll see how to frame out porches, doors, windows, cornices, and gables. There are examples of turned work - posts, finials, drops, and balusters - lattice work, roof ventilators, and chimney tops.

My favorite part is the treatment of interiors. Staircases are shown in elevation and in details. There are examples of all types of trim work, from wainscoting to fireplace mantels. Best of all, several rooms are shown in perspective or elevation, and then in cutaway detail. There's another book that provides a better set of plans and details (I'll update this when I find the title) for every room in the house, but this provides a great introduction.

If you own a Victorian house, you should have this book before you even think of tearing into any walls. You'll gain an understanding of what's behind the lathe before you cut out something you shouldn't have. If you're building or renovating and like Victorian details, this will give you a lot of ideas that you can incorporate into your house. Today's houses are better built - stronger, well insulated, with all the modern conveniences - but what they lack is detail. This book shows you why our houses now are so hopelessly plain-Jane compared to the houses build a century ago.

Great book, but I just wish the images were at higher resolution to see them in greater detail. I would recommend buying the physical copy if you really want to see the tiniest detail.

About the Author

Dan Tow is an independent consultant, operating under the banner SingingSQL (www.singingsql.com). His experience solving Oracle-related performance problems goes all the way back to his 1989 hire by Oracle Corporation. During most of his tenure at Oracle, Dan focused on the performance of Oracle Applications, managing the performance group for that division. In this role, he found a fertile testing ground for his SQL tuning method applied to the huge set of complex SQL included in those applications, including both online SQL and diverse batch processes. In 1998, Dan left Oracle to lead performance for TenFold Corporation, where he applied the same methods to tuning questions on DB2, and SQL Server, and Sybase, as well as on Oracle. In 2002, Dan started his own business, SingingSQL, through which he offers diverse database-related tuning services, including SQL tuning and systematically analyzing load to learn which SQL should be tuned. He has introduced his SQL tuning method to over 1,000 people in short lectures, and now offers in-depth courses in the material, using this book as textbook. Dan has a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He lives in Palo Alto, California, and can be reached at dantow@singingsql.com.

This Old Dog learned a new trick

Like Dan, I have been doing Oracle for a long time (since 1984). I offer three opinions about Dan's book:

1) learning how to do query diagrams is great for people who have never done them and this book is the best (maybe even the only) book for learning this. In learning to do the diagrams, you will understand the basic logic and basic math that an optimizer must do in order to get you a good plan. Do not worry. It is not a deep math book and there are no complex calculations. Indeed Dan shows you how basic it all really is. This gives you a deeper foundation in optimization and brings you closer to having that INFORMATIONAL CRITICAL MASS which is required to do good tuning.

2) the book is outdated. As I said, I have been doing Oracle since 1984. For two decades, Dan's method of tuning and relying mostly on NESTED LOOP JOIN was the only real game in town. And Dan explains it well. Unfortunately about the time Dan published the book (2003), Oracle was entering a revolution in its design. Most notably, databases were increasing in size dramatically and this made the need for PARTITIONING strategies and PARTITION WISE HASH JOINS very high. Dan's techniques of query diagraming are still useful for understanding a query's needs, but the book is today outdated because of its lack of treatement for PARTITIONING and HASH JOIN techniques. Don't get me wrong, even outdated, this book has great value because it clarifies what you need to tell other people, why certain things happened.

3) Even outdated, I learned one neat join trick which alone is worth the 20 dollars I paid for this book. Page 146 has a gem of a trick that I never considered but which I can see as offering massive benefits in a few special situations which I have faced in the past but could not solve. Thanks Dan. It is even easier to do in today's 10g and 11g databases because you need no hints to make it happen.

This brings me to my last commentary. The reason I say the book is outdated is because Oracle has come so far in the last five years with its optimizer that the trick to getting Oracle to give you the right plan is to feed it good information. If you do this then it will do what Dan shows you in this book (only better than you could) and give you a great if not best plan. Thus you will rarely build a query diagram these days. Instead you will try to figure out where information was not provided to Oracle correctly and fix that. If this turns out not to be the case, then the problem is likely because the SQL is crappy and you need to rewrite it. I would say that given the right information (stats collected right, constraints created for PK,UK,FK, indexes built to support the constraints, datatypes correct for columns, not null defined when data is actually required), Oracle will produce a great or best plan 99% of the time. The other 1% of the time you will 99% of the time be doing SQL rewrites. That leaves 1/100th of 1% of queries to be a real problem. Many times your system won't be that complicated.

Not being an expert in DB2 or Sql Server I cannot say how up-to-date the material remains on these databases but since I doubt their Optimizer Technology is as advanced as Oracle's there may yet be significant value retained in these two spaces. I can say that it is true that Dan's diagramming methods are universal for any database and that reading the book will provide you with that boost towards critical mass I mentioned earlier regardless of what database you use.

If you are an Oracle Developer/DBA and you are new to tuning, or want to see what you know and don't know, you can't go wrong by getting this book. After reading the book, start reading about PARTITIONING and PARTITION WISE HASH JOINS. Understanding what is in this book and understanding the details of PARTITIONING and PARTITION WISE HASH JOINS in various scenarios will put you at the forefront of tuners. Maybe its time for Dan to do an updated version of the book.

One last comment. I don't want this to seem like a negative review. Remember I said I have been doing Oracle since 1984. As "expert" as I am with Oracle and in tuning it (I am a reasonably good tuner for most things), I learned stuff from Dan and his book. Twenty Five years of doing it and this book still taught me things. I am very happy to have purchased this book and you will be too.

Quick solutions for difficult optimization problems

"Tell me something I don't already know", that's what crosses my mind every time I pick up a new performance, tuning book. If you're like me, 90% of the content in any DBA book in the store is 'old hat'.
This book is refreshing. It doesn't waste time going over all of the stuff you learned years ago.
Knowing how to read an execution plan or when to pick a hash join over a nested loop join is not what this book is about. There are plenty of books on the market that cover basic, vendor specific, query tuning. I personally have about 20 of these books on my bookshelf here at home. (Over the years I've worked on Sybase, SQL Server, Informix XPS, & Oracle.)
Here's the deal...
Anyone who has worked with really big systems will eventually run into an optimization problem that seems to be unsolvable. You can try histograms, compressed key indexes, partitioning, pre-joined indexes, and materialized views, but you still can't get the performance that's being requested. For a DBA, it can be a very frustrating dilemma. This is especially true when you know from the data volume that you should be able to get there.
The truth is, optimizers can't always get the right solution, even with correct statistics. There are some good technical reasons why this is true, but that's out of scope for my review. In any case, that's where this book comes to the rescue. I feel that it gives you some insight into the optimization problem and tells you how to correct the problems that your optimizer can't figure out.
This book is NOT for use on 95% of your queries. Most optimizers will pick the correct access plan if the DBA does his/her job correctly and collects the appropriate statistics.
In my experience, I get two types of problems that I have trouble getting the optimizer to solve:
#1. Joining together a large number (8-14) of tables. At least 1 or 2 of the tables have over 30G of real data. By `real data', I mean that 30G of data is actually populated.
#2. Making high transaction queries read the fewest amount of buffers in order to get rid of latching problems.
After I read the first few diagramming chapters of this book, I thought I'd give it a try on a problem that was recently solved at work. I was surprised. It worked, and even with my clumsiness with the method, it only took me about 2 hours to get a solution. It took us about 3 days at work. Our trial and error solution was slightly better, than what I came up with using the author's method. However, it was so close that had I used his method, I most certainly would have gone on to another problem. (The author's solution was strange because I would never have solved the join order the way that he did. His solution actually had me pick the largest table, out of 10, to drive the query. I thought this was odd because my test query had some very good filters on smaller tables.)
These were the results per execution:
Optimizer - 100K buffers.
Trial & Error - 1700 buffers.
Book method (basic graphing) - 2000 buffers.
If I had known about this book, I could have solved this problem in a few hours. Instead it took several DBA's, a few day's time to come up with a solution that was only marginally better.
Since this method appeared to work so well for OLTP, I went back and looked at a very large OLAP query that I had worked on last year. I and several developers had spent days trying to get it to run faster. Even with the author's method, I still couldn't make it better, but I was happy to see that the join order picked by the optimizer was almost identical to what I had calculated using the book.
I plan on studying this guide over and over until I've memorized this method. I don't think it will solve every problem, but I think it gives you an edge over using experience alone.
Before you purchase this book...
Keep in mind, that SQL tuning is fundamentally *not a simple problem*, so readers should not buy the book expecting an easy list of simple tips and tricks. (If the problem was easy, the optimizer likely would have got it right in the first place, and you wouldn't be tuning!) The correct solution to the problem is fairly complex, as complex as it *needs* to be.
Also, it's not noted anywhere, but I gathered that the author assumes that the reader will have basic high school Algebra skills, and will have taken a basic statistics course in order to fully understand the reasoning behind the explanations. Although, Algebra and statistical knowledge are probably not necessary to learn the tuning method presented. I state this because I told a good friend about this book, and his first question was, "Does it have a lot of math to go through?" So, if statistics is not your thing, don't worry. The author only presents enough information to give you a level of comfort that his method is based on mathematics. He doesn't require that you know "graph theory" or anything like that.
By the way, our change from 100K buffers per transaction to 1700 buffers, dropped the CPU utilization for the website that was running the OLTP query by about 70%. That was on a 16 CPU, Sun/Solaris box. So proper SQL tuning can save you a lot of $$$.

A Work of Genius

I have withdrawn my earlier review because I did not properly understand the importance of this book until the second reading. That is a difficult admission to make since my business is database performance tuning.

This book is about tuning SQL queries in a systematic and scientific manner. It is above all about determining the optimum order in which the query engine should access the tables involved. My quibble was that join order is only a part of the whole tuning problem and most of the time the query optimizer got it right anyway. While this is true, I see now that it misses the point.

The fact that the optimizer gets it right so often allows us to take join order for granted. But how do we know the optimizer got it right unless we know what the optimum join order is? That is what this book teaches, a methodology and an elegant system of notation that allows us to determine the optimum join order of the most complex query. As the author points out, the number of possible join orders increases factorially with the number of tables involved. An 8 table join has 40,320 possible join orders. That rules out trial and error for all but the simplest queries.
