Lady Penelope de Vere has been in love with Rake for as long as she can remember, daydreaming over him constantly. But as her debut in the ton comes closer, she decides to finally let go of her silly childhood dream and accept someone else's wish to court her, someone who appreciates a quiet, book-filled life as she does. She wants marriage and, despite all the hints she throws his way, Rake only wants a mistress...she thinks. Lord Richard Darling has known Penny since she was a child and not once thought of her as anything but his niece's best friend and a very convenient scone-fetcher. That is, not until he happens upon her swimming in the lake at Chester Park dressed only in her thin chemise. A most eligible bachelor with a libertine reputation, he suddenly finds the girl he's always appreciated has turned into a woman he could love forever. So why won't she accept his proposal?

Review
"I immediately fell in love with Lord Richard Darling. He's the typical bad-boy-out-to-live-life-to-its-fullest, fun-loving and a great character. I always enjoy stories about seemingly irredeemable rakes."
- Romantic Historical Reviews

"Though this may ring as a typical Regency romance I find that Jennifer Wenn's characters and story-lines are still catching and draw in the reader."
- The Book Maven

"Jennifer Wenn weaves a wonderful story centering on love and family."

Slightly Better than Book 1, But Still Bad *SPOILERS*
By Danielle N. Hart
I had to check this one out after reading the first one, to see if it improved any.

Sadly, I didn't see it.

I actually would have put this book first in the series, as I feel like the author does a better job of laying out the character dynamics in this one. That said, everyone is still too modern, and I don't get a sense of the Regency at all.

I liked Penelope in the first book, and I still liked her. I also liked that we got some explanation for the issues in her family, as well as an explanation/expansion for some of the events in the first book, A Family Affair. The issues were pretty over the top, and I didn't feel like the rich-and-powerful hero's family really did anything about it.

SPOILERS

The whole thing with the hero's initial proposal, where Penelope thinks he's actually asking her to be his mistress - well, based on what he says, I could see why. Granted, she doesn't give him a chance to explain, but based on what he says, I'm not sure I would have either:

“Where do you want to live?”
“Where?” She frowned at him, confused over his choice of words. “Do you mean at Chester Park or Berkeley House?” “Heavens, no,” he chuckled, amused. “That will never do. No, I’m thinking more of where you want our little love nest to be. I really don’t think my family will appreciate us under the same roof with them. Better to have a place of our own, where it will be only you and me and a very comfortable bed.”

The author's sex scenes have not improved either: "His fingers were everywhere on her skin, creating paths of sensation wherever they touched. She pulled her own fingers through his dark, silken hair and held on tight as he deepened the kiss until she couldn’t think anymore. Not until an uncomfortable pain between her legs surprised her did she wake from the passionate bubble he had created around them, but then it was too late. With a growl he pushed hard into her, faster and faster, until his body stiffened convulsively and he collapsed onto her. A strange throbbing soreness brought tears to her eyes, and only the heaviness of his body made it impossible for her to sob hysterically. She tried to make him move, but he was out cold, and in the end she had to push him off her. He landed on the floor with an “Ouf” without waking up. She sat up and put her legs together, frantically stroking the delicate and now wrinkled fabric of her skirt as the truth of the moment hit her. She wasn’t a virgin anymore."

Better than the first
By Anna
I really liked the first book in this series, so I bought this one. I never purchase books anymore unless I've already read them and loved them, but I took a chance with this one because I couldn't get it at my library. I'm glad I took that chance! I look forward to reading more books in this series in the future. So with that being said you should read A Family Affair first.

One of the things I like about the series as a whole is that, unlike a lot of romances, the sex scenes are not explicitly detailed. I don't feel like I'm reading smut. There is still lots of passion, though.

In this story we read about the love triangle between Penny, her dream man Rake, and her realistic man Thomas. Penny and her dream man have some communication issues they need to work out. This story is darker than the first one, because you get more information about a scene that occurred in the first book. I am really hoping the author gives us more information about Penelope and her family situation because it's interesting. I really want to know what is going on with Charmaine, Penny's sister.

3.5 stars...
By The Blushing Reader
Never Had A Dream Come True was my first book by Jennifer Wenn and I am sure it won't be my last. I tend to read more contemporary books these days but every now and then I am tempted away from my preferred genre and take a chance on a new historical book. Never Had a Dream Come True was an interesting read with lots of interesting plot points and a few twists that left me scratching my head. This is book 2 in a series and I think I might have needed to read book 1 to get the background I was craving and fill some of the holes in the story. I would suggest reading A Family Affair first before diving into Never Had a Dream Come True, I know I will be going back to read it to see if that was the key I was missing.

Jennifer Wenn created an interesting mix up of characters with Penny and Rake. Penny was very young (17) and some of her choices and decisions reflected that. Rake was older (not sure by how much and had been the source of Penny's daydreams for years, until one day at the lake. While I did enjoy this story it did leave me wanting more information. I never really understood Rake. I would have LOVED to get inside his head or learn more about him. My heart broke for Penny and the way her father treated her, but some of her choices infuriated me and led to many misunderstandings.

Never Had a Dream Come True was a good historical book, that takes on a bit of a different side to your typical books about the ton and the aristocracy. While I wish it would have dived deeper into subject matters I did enjoy the story of Penny and Rake and will be looking for future Jennifer Wenn books since the Darling family was quite enjoyable and I would love to read more about all the brothers (especially Rake's twin) and get the scoop on Penny's sister.
